Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 35) {يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّنْ نَّارٍ …:’’ شُوَاظٌ ‘‘} A flame of fire in which there is no smoke, and {’’ نُحَاسٌ ‘‘} smoke. {’’ نُحَاسٌ ‘‘} also means copper; the meaning is given as molten copper. {’’ اِنْتَصَرَ يَنْتَصِرُ اِنْتِصَارًا ‘‘} to protect oneself, to take revenge. That is, you can never escape from Our grasp in any way; if you intend to do so, then pure flames of fire will be rained upon you, which will burn you to ashes, and smoke that will even block your breath. Then you will neither be able to protect yourselves nor take any kind of revenge. It can also mean that along with the flames of fire, molten copper will be thrown upon you, and both will burn you to ashes.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

35. 1 The meaning is that if you try to escape anywhere on the Day of Resurrection, the angels will hurl flames of fire and smoke upon you, or pour molten copper upon your heads, and bring you back. The other meaning of نحاس is given as molten copper.

35. 2 That is, you will not have the power to avert Allah's punishment.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

35. There will be sent against you a flame of fire and a blast of scorching smoke [24], and you will not be able to defend yourselves [25].

[24] ﴿شواظ﴾ means a pure flame of fire in which there is no mixture of smoke, and if there is a mixture, it is called nuhās. However, even in that case, the fire should be more and the smoke less. The color of such fire becomes like copper, and nuhās also means copper.
[25] Intisār means both taking revenge for some injustice or excess, and also defending oneself from some excess. The meaning is that if anyone tries to escape from reckoning or Allah's grasp, he will never succeed in it. Upon him will be sent flames of fire and flames mixed with smoke, and he will be compelled to remain standing at the place where he is commanded to stand, and he will be so helpless and powerless that he will neither be able to protect himself nor take revenge on the angels.
