سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ أَيُّهَ ٱلثَّقَلَانِ ﴿31﴾
We shall attend to you, O you two classes (jinn and men)!
سَنَفْرُغُ sanafrughu Soon We will attend
لَكُمْ lakum to you
أَيُّهَ ayyuha O you
ٱلثَّقَلَانِ l-thaqalāni two classes

The plural of {سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ اَيُّهَ الثَّقَلٰنِ: ’’ الثَّقَلٰنِ ‘‘ ’’ ثَقَلٌ‘‘} is a heavy and weighty thing. What is meant is that among the living creatures inhabiting the earth, the two heavy and numerous groups are the jinn and mankind. Out of all creatures, only these two have been given the responsibility of religious obligations, which is why they have been addressed. Al-Tabari has narrated with an authentic chain from Ali bin Abi Talhah the explanation of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding {’’ سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ اَيُّهَ الثَّقَلٰنِ ‘‘}: {’’ وَعِيْدٌ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ لِلْعِبَادِ وَلَيْسَ بِاللّٰهِ شُغُلٌ وَ هُوَ فَارِغٌ‘‘} meaning, "These words are a warning from Allah to His servants; otherwise, there is no occupation that distracts Allah from another task, and He is free." Imam Bukhari said: {’’سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ سَنُحَاسِبُكُمْ لاَ يَشْغَلُهُ شَيْءٌ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ مَعْرُوْفٌ فِيْ كَلاَمِ الْعَرَبِ يُقَالُ لَأَتَفَرَّغَنَّ لَكَ وَمَا بِهِ شُغْلٌ يَقُوْلُ لَآخُذَنَّكَ عَلٰي غِرَّتِكَ‘‘} [ بخاري، التفسیر، سورۃ الرحمٰن، قبل الحدیث : ۴۸۷۸ ] meaning, the phrase {’’ سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ ‘‘} (We will soon be free for you) means that We will soon take account of you, because nothing prevents Allah from doing one thing over another, and this is well-known in the Arabic language. It is said, 'I will be free for you,' even though the person is not occupied with anything. The meaning is that 'I will catch you in your heedlessness.' Another meaning of {’’ سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ ‘‘} is that, O jinn and mankind! We have set a timetable for you; in this world, you have the opportunity to act, and here We are fulfilling your needs at every moment, giving you whatever you ask for. Very soon, We will be finished with this phase, then the Day of Resurrection will be established, and the phase of your reckoning will begin.

31. 1. This does not mean that Allah is not free, rather this is said idiomatically, the purpose of which is warning and threat (to jinn and mankind). That is why it is said that they have been bound by the obligation of Shari'ah, and from this obligation or burden, other creations are exempt.

31. O two groups! [20] Soon We will attend to you [21].

[20] ﴿ثَقَلاَنِ﴾ ﴿ثقل﴾ meaning burden, weight, heaviness, and ﴿ثقيل﴾ and ﴿ثقال﴾ meaning a heavy and weighty thing, and ﴿ثقلان﴾ meaning, among the living creatures settled on the earth, two heavy and numerous groups. The two major species, jinn and humans, who are accountable. And its second meaning could also be that since the majority of jinn and humans have been criminals, disobedient to Allah, and a burden on Allah’s earth, these groups have been called ﴿ثَقَلاَنِ﴾.

Allah Taking Account from People is Also a Blessing:

That is, to take your account. It does not mean that at this time We are so busy that We do not have the opportunity to take your account. Rather, it means that the time for your reckoning has not yet come. However, that time is also drawing near when the second phase of this universe will begin, and that phase is about to arrive. Understand it like this: just as a person has already made his schedule or timetable and says that at the moment he does not have leisure for a certain task, its turn will come after an hour. And taking account from these groups and then giving them reward or punishment accordingly is also a great blessing of Allah and a requirement of His justice.
