20. 1. The summary of this is that, according to some, the two rivers refer to their separate existences, such as the rivers of sweet water, from which crops are irrigated and people use their water for other needs as well. The second type is the water of the seas, which is salty and has other benefits. These two do not mix with each other. Some have explained its meaning as that within the salty seas, waves of sweet water flow, and these two waves do not mix with each other, rather they remain separate and distinct from one another. One form of this is that Allah has made waves of sweet water flow at several places within the salty seas, and they remain separate from the salty water. Another form is that salty water is above, and beneath it, at the bottom, is a spring of sweet water. As indeed, at some places, this is the case. A third form is that at places where the water of a sweet river falls into the sea, many people have observed that for miles, both waters flow side by side in such a way that on one side is the sweet river water and on the other side is the vast salty water of the sea, and although there is no barrier between them, they do not mix. Between them is that barrier (برزخ) which Allah has placed, and neither of them crosses it.
