(Ayah 46){ بَلِالسَّاعَةُمَوْعِدُهُمْ … : ’’دَاهِيَةٌ‘‘} refers to a great calamity, and {’’ اَدْهٰى ‘‘} to an even greater calamity. {’’مُرٌّ‘‘} (with a Dammah on the Meem) means bitter, harsh. {’’مَرَّيَمُرُّمَرَارَةً‘‘} (n) means to be bitter. {’’اَمَرُّ‘‘} is the comparative form, meaning more bitter. That is, the defeat that occurs in the world is indeed a great calamity and very bitter, as it involves killing, capture, slavery, humiliation, disgrace, and various kinds of punishments. However, the real punishment is promised for the Day of Resurrection, and the calamity of the Hereafter is far greater and much more bitter than the calamities of this world, because the calamity and bitterness of this world will eventually come to an end, but the punishment of the Hereafter will never end. Moreover, the fire of the Hereafter is seventy (70) times more severe than the fire of this world.
