وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ﴿38﴾
And verily, an abiding torment seized them early in the morning.
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly
صَبَّحَهُم ṣabbaḥahum seized them in the morning
بُكْرَةً buk'ratan early
عَذَابٌۭ ʿadhābun a punishment
مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭ mus'taqirrun abiding

38. And early in the morning, an enduring punishment overtook them [28].

[28] Then, the next morning, the greater punishment that befell them has already been detailed at several places before. First, the entire region was lifted by Jibreel ؑ on his wings and raised high, then turned upside down and hurled back to the earth. As a result, this region sank into the ground. Stones rained down from above. Then, over this sunken land, the sea water flooded in, which became putrid and foul-smelling. In this way, every trace of this people was wiped from the face of existence.
