فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ ﴿54﴾
So there covered them that which did cover (i.e. torment with stones).

(Ayah 54) {فَغَشّٰىهَا مَا غَشّٰى: ’’غَشِيَ يَغْشٰي‘‘} (ع) The act of one thing covering another. {’’غَشّٰي يُغَشِّيْ‘‘} (taf‘īl) To place a covering thing over something, to cover something with another. 54. 1. That is, after this, a rain of stones was sent down upon them.

54. Then there covered that city a punishment which completely overwhelmed it [36].

[36] The center of the preaching of Sayyiduna Lut ؑ was Sodom and the surrounding settlements, which were sunk into the earth, and over them spread a black, foul-smelling water, which is called the Dead Sea or the Sea of Death or the Sea of Lut.
