And how many a generation We have destroyed before them who were stronger in power than they. And (when Our Torment came), they ran for a refuge in the land! Could they find any place of refuge (for them to save themselves from destruction)?

(Ayah 36) ➊ {وَكَمْاَهْلَكْنَاقَبْلَهُمْمِّنْقَرْنٍ …:’’ فَنَقَّبُوْا ‘‘} The meaning of naqaba is "hole." {’’نَقَبَ (ن) فِيالْأَرْضِ‘‘} He roamed about in the land. {’’نَقَّبَتَنْقِيْبًا‘‘} (in the form of taf‘īl) due to the addition of letters, there is emphasis in the meaning, i.e., he roamed thoroughly. In relation to naqaba (hole), the translation of {’’ فَنَقَّبُوْافِيالْبِلَادِ ‘‘} has been given as: "So they searched the cities thoroughly." Before this, the punishment to be given to the disbelievers in the Hereafter was mentioned; after mentioning the good end of the believers in between, now the dreadful punishments given to the disbelievers in this world are mentioned. The purpose is to warn the disbelievers and to comfort the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the believers so that they are not overawed by the grandeur of the disbelievers.
➋ That is, We destroyed many generations before these disbelievers who were much stronger in seizing and more powerful than them, such as the people of Nuh, ‘Ad, Thamud, and the people of Pharaoh, etc. So what strength do these poor ones have in comparison to them? See also Surah Ar-Rum (9).
➌ {فَنَقَّبُوْافِيالْبِلَادِ:} That is, they were far ahead of the people of Makkah in trade and business, so they had thoroughly searched the cities of the world for this purpose. Some scholars have explained its meaning as that they did not only have power and control over their own country, but they had also penetrated into other countries of the world.
➍ {هَلْمِنْمَّحِيْصٍ: ’’ مَحِيْصٍ ‘‘ ’’حَاصَيَحِيْصُحَيْصًا‘‘} is a noun of place, a place to escape. That is, when the punishment came upon them, they kept searching for a place to escape, wondering if there was any place to run, but they found no refuge anywhere.

36. 1 (فَنقبُوْفِیالْبِلَادِ) (wandering in the cities) has been explained to mean that they used to travel to various cities for trade and business more than the people of Makkah. But when Our punishment came, they found no refuge or way to escape anywhere.

36. And how many generations We destroyed before them who were mightier than them in strength. (When the punishment came) they searched every corner of the land [42] for a place of escape.
[42] One meaning is clear from the translation. Another is that these nations were so powerful and warlike that they did not confine themselves to their own lands, but also ravaged many neighboring countries. Yet, when Our punishment came, they could not find any place of refuge anywhere.
