Those who believe and do righteous good deeds, there is no sin on them for what they ate (in the past), if they fear Allâh (by keeping away from His forbidden things), and believe and do righteous good deeds, and again fear Allâh and believe, and once again fear Allâh and do good deeds with Ihsân (perfection). And Allâh loves the good-doers.

(Ayah 93) ➊ {لَيْسَعَلَىالَّذِيْنَاٰمَنُوْا … :} That is, those people who drank alcohol and gambled before its prohibition, while having faith and doing righteous deeds, will not be held accountable for it. This verse was revealed when, after the prohibition of alcohol, some companions began to say: What will be the state of our brothers who used to drink alcohol and gamble, and what reward will those receive from Allah who were martyred in the Battle of Uhud while alcohol was in their stomachs. (Kabir, Ibn Kathir) ➋ {اِذَامَااتَّقَوْاوَّاٰمَنُوْا …:} Here, the command of taqwa being given three times either means emphasis, or that the first {’’اتَّقَوْا ‘‘} means to avoid shirk, the second taqwa means to avoid alcohol, and the third taqwa means to avoid all evil things or to remain steadfast on taqwa. Some have written that the first {’’ اتَّقَوْا ‘‘} means to avoid shirk, the second means to avoid sins, and the third means to avoid minor sins. Similarly, in {’’اٰمَنُوْا ‘‘}, the first faith means to believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the second means to remain steadfast in faith. In the third instance, instead of {’’ اٰمَنُوْا ‘‘}, {’’اَحْسَنُوْا ‘‘} is mentioned, meaning to do good to people and to attain excellence in worship, which according to the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then He surely sees you.

93. 1. After the prohibition of alcohol, some companions ؓ thought that many of their companions had been martyred in battles or had passed away otherwise, while they used to drink alcohol. So in this verse, this doubt has been removed that their end was upon faith and piety because alcohol had not yet been made forbidden at that time.

93. Those who believe and do righteous deeds will not be blamed for what they consumed (of intoxicants) before (the prohibition of alcohol) [139], as long as they are mindful in the future, believe, and do righteous deeds, and remain conscious of Allah and believe, and then continue to avoid (whatever is forbidden) [140] and do good. For Allah loves those who do good.
[139] Sayyiduna Anas narrates: When the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, I was serving as the cupbearer, pouring wine for people in the house of Abu Talhah ؓ. When the proclamation of the prohibition of alcohol was made, Abu Talhah ؓ said, "Go and pour out all the wine." So I poured it out, and it flowed through the streets of Madinah. Then some people began to say: "What will be the state of those who had wine in their stomachs and were martyred?" At that time, Allah Almighty revealed this verse. [بخاري۔ كتاب التفسير] [140] The Different Levels of Faith:
In this verse, the words "faith" and "taqwa" (piety) have been used three times because faith and taqwa have different levels. When a person first believes, his taqwa is at a lower level; then, as he performs righteous deeds, his faith also becomes stronger and his taqwa increases as well. In other words, the standard for determining the level of faith and taqwa is the quantity of righteous deeds, and by performing righteous deeds, faith and taqwa increase. Thus, both of these prove to be supportive and helpful to each other. The highest level of faith and taqwa is "ihsan." The literal meaning of ihsan is to perform any act with the pleasure and willingness of the heart and in the best possible manner. And any righteous deed that is performed under these conditions will be at the level of ihsan. In the Hadith of Jibril, in response to Jibril's question, "What is ihsan?" the Prophet ﷺ said: "Ihsan is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state, then at least know that He sees you." [بخاري۔ كتاب الايمان۔ باب سوال جبريل النبي] And the concept of worship is so broad that it can be applied to every righteous deed.
