Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Now has come to you Our Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) making (things) clear unto you, after a break in (the series of) Messengers, lest you say: "There came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner." But now has come unto you a bringer of glad tidings and a warner. And Allâh is Able to do all things.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 19) ➊ {يٰۤاَهْلَالْكِتٰبِقَدْجَآءَكُمْرَسُوْلُنَا …… :} That is, the coming of messengers had been discontinued for a period; ‘Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, was the last prophet among the Children of Israel. Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I am the most entitled to, or the closest of all people to, the son of Mary (peace be upon them); the prophets are paternal brothers; there is no prophet between me and him.” [ بخاری، أحادیث الأنبیاء، باب قول اﷲ تعالٰی : «واذكر في الكتاب مريم» : ۳۴۴۲ ] According to Salman al-Farsi, may Allah be pleased with him, even 600 years had passed since his (Jesus’s) mission. [ بخاری، مناقب الأنصار، باب اسلام سلمان الأنصاری : ۳۹۴۸ ] And no prophet had come, then the last prophet, the Noble Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent. On this verse, Shah Abdul Qadir, may Allah have mercy on him, writes that after ‘Isa, peace be upon him, no messenger had come, so it is said that you lament that you were not in the time of the messengers so that you could have received their training; now, after a long time, you have attained the company of a messenger, consider it a blessing, and Allah is able—if you do not accept, He will raise another creation better than you, just as the people of Musa, peace be upon him, refused to wage jihad with him, so Allah deprived them and had the land of Sham conquered by others. (Mawaddih)
➋ {فَقَدْجَآءَكُمْبَشِيْرٌوَّنَذِيْرٌ :} In this verse, the fundamental purpose of the Messenger of Allah’s, peace and blessings be upon him, mission is stated, that is, due to the long absence of any resolute prophet, Allah’s commands had been altered and distorted, and there was no distinction between truth and falsehood, so he, peace and blessings be upon him, purified the religion of Ibrahim from alteration and distortion and made people acquainted with the truth so that the proof would be established against them and there would remain no room for excuse. 19. 1. The period between Hazrat Isa ؑ and Hazrat Muhammad Rasulullah ﷺ, which is approximately 570 or 60 years, is called the period of Fatrah. The People of the Book are being told that after this Fatrah, We have sent Our last Messenger, so now you will not even be able to say that no Bashir and Nazeer Prophet came to us.

19. O People of the Book! Our Messenger has now come to you, making the commands clear to you after a break [50] in the coming of messengers, lest you say, "No bearer of glad tidings or warner ever came to us." So now a bearer of glad tidings and a warner has come to you. And Allah is Powerful over all things.
[50] The People of the Book Awaited the Last Prophet:
Among the Children of Israel, multiple prophets were sent at the same time in one era. Both religious and worldly leadership was with them. After Sayyiduna Isa ؑ, the chain of prophethood was discontinued and remained so for six hundred years. After that, the Last Prophet was sent. The Jews used to await this Prophet and would say to the polytheists that when the Last Prophet comes, we will gather under his banner and gain victory over you. But when the Last Prophet arrived, the Jews recognized him exactly as he had been foretold to them. Then, solely on the basis that he was not from the Children of Israel, they denied his prophethood. Allah Almighty is addressing these Jews, saying that the bearer of glad tidings and warner whom you were awaiting has come. Now you have no excuse left. Therefore, if you now deny him, know well that Allah Almighty is fully capable of punishing you for this crime of disbelief. Like the Jews, the Christians were also awaiting the Last Prophet, and they thought that this Prophet would be from among them, and that they would join him to take revenge on the Jews. But when their wish was not fulfilled, most of them also became opponents of the Last Prophet.
