وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا نَصَـٰرَىٰٓ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَهُمْ فَنَسُوا۟ حَظًّا مِّمَّا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَأَغْرَيْنَا بَيْنَهُمُ ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ وَسَوْفَ يُنَبِّئُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَصْنَعُونَ ﴿14﴾
And from those who call themselves Christians, We took their covenant, but they have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them. So We planted amongst them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection (when they discarded Allâh’s Book, disobeyed Allâh’s Messengers and His Orders and transgressed beyond bounds in Allâh’s disobedience); and Allâh will inform them of what they used to do.
وَمِنَ wamina And from
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
قَالُوٓا۟ qālū said
إِنَّا innā Indeed we
نَصَـٰرَىٰٓ naṣārā (are) Christians
أَخَذْنَا akhadhnā We took
مِيثَـٰقَهُمْ mīthāqahum their covenant
فَنَسُوا۟ fanasū but they forgot
حَظًّۭا ḥaẓẓan a part
مِّمَّا mimmā of what
ذُكِّرُوا۟ dhukkirū they were reminded
بِهِۦ bihi of [it]
فَأَغْرَيْنَا fa-aghraynā So We aroused
بَيْنَهُمُ baynahumu between them
ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ l-ʿadāwata [the] enmity
وَٱلْبَغْضَآءَ wal-baghḍāa and [the] hatred
إِلَىٰ ilā till
يَوْمِ yawmi (the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection
وَسَوْفَ wasawfa And soon
يُنَبِّئُهُمُ yunabbi-uhumu will inform them
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
بِمَا bimā of what
كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to
يَصْنَعُونَ yaṣnaʿūna do

(Ayah 14) ➊ {وَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوْۤا اِنَّا نَصٰرٰۤى ……:} means "helpers of Allah." Since these people are lying in their claim, Allah Almighty did not say that We took a covenant from the Christians, but rather said that We took a covenant from those who call themselves "Christians." The meaning is that, just like the Jews, We took a covenant from the Christians as well regarding monotheism and faith in the Last Prophet, but they too broke this covenant. (Kabir, Qurtubi)
{فَاَغْرَيْنَا بَيْنَهُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَ الْبَغْضَآءَ :} means that from that time until the Day of Resurrection, We have kindled enmity and hatred among them. Thus, even now, there is religious hostility among them, and there are also many sects among the Christians themselves who are enemies of each other and thirsty for each other's blood. As for their unity against the Muslims, that is due to the Muslims abandoning jihad and the disbelievers taking their respective shares from the lands of the Muslims; otherwise, despite appearing united outwardly, their internal fighting is a definite reality, from which Muslims can benefit by studying it. Allah Almighty said: «تَحْسَبُهُمْ جَمِيْعًا وَّ قُلُوْبُهُمْ شَتّٰى» [ الحشر : ۱۴ ] "You think they are united, but their hearts are divided."
But unfortunately, now such discord and enmity have arisen among the Muslims that only the name "Muslim" unites them, while the disbelievers are taking advantage of their division and ruling over them.

14. 1 Nasara is from nusrah, meaning help. This is derived from the response of the sincere followers of Isa (علیہ السلام) to his question (من انصاری الی اللہ) "Who are my helpers in the cause of Allah?" They replied (نحن انصار اللہ) "We are the helpers of Allah." Like the Jews, they are also People of the Book. Allah Almighty also took a covenant from them, but they did not care for it. As a result, their hearts also became devoid of receptivity and their character became hollow.

14. 2 This is the punishment for deviating from the divine covenant and for inaction, which Allah Almighty has imposed upon them until the Day of Resurrection. Thus, there are many sects among the Christians who harbor intense hatred and enmity towards each other, declare each other disbelievers, and do not worship in each other's places of worship. It appears that this punishment has also been imposed upon the Muslim Ummah. This Ummah has also been divided into many sects, between whom there are severe differences and walls of hatred and enmity. May Allah Almighty have mercy.

14. (In the same way,) We also took a solemn covenant from those who said, "We are Christians." But they too forgot a good part [40] of what they were reminded of. So We stirred up enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection. And soon Allah will inform them of what they used to do.

[40] A similar firm covenant was taken from the Christians as well, but they did the same as the Jews had done. They too abandoned seeking guidance from the Book of Allah and became engrossed in philosophical and monastic hair-splitting, the result of which was that they split into many sects and began declaring each other disbelievers, and the seeds of mutual hatred and enmity began to grow permanently among them. Then the matter did not end there; rather, permanent enmity and hostility also arose between the Christians and the Jews. And wherever the Christians established rule, they inflicted severe oppression upon the Jews, and this enmity of theirs will continue until the Day of Judgment. This is because their books have been altered, and there no longer remains any divinely revealed, mutually agreed-upon thing among them on the basis of which their unity could ever be established.
