‘Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Allâh, our Lord! Send us from the heaven a table spread (with food) that there may be for us - for the first and the last of us - a festival and a sign from You; and provide us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers."

(Ayah 114)➊ {قَالَعِيْسَىابْنُمَرْيَمَاللّٰهُمَّرَبَّنَاۤ …:} This is a prayer made with utmost humility, in which {’’ اللّٰهُمَّ ‘‘} (O Allah!) is combined with {’’ رَبَّنَاۤ ‘‘} (O our Sustainer!). From this, it is evident that Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام was neither Allah, nor the son of Allah, nor one possessing Allah’s authority. His disciples also did not believe in any of these things; otherwise, why would they ask Isa عليه السلام to pray, and why would Isa عليه السلام himself pray with such humility? Rather, his disciples would have demanded the table-spread from him, and he would have fulfilled it himself.
➋ {تَكُوْنُلَنَاعِيْدًالِّاَوَّلِنَاوَاٰخِرِنَا:} The scholars have deduced from this that the table-spread descended on a Sunday, because that is the festival of the Christians, and Saturday is the festival of the Jews, even though the festival day from Allah was Friday. But the Jews and Christians differed regarding the original day, and Allah granted the Muslims the ability to accept Friday without any objection, in accordance with the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). [ دیکھیے مسلم، الجمعۃ، باب ھدایۃ ھذہ الأمۃ… : ۸۵۶ ] The word ‘Eid’ is derived from {’’عَادَيَعُوْدُ ‘‘}, meaning a happiness that returns again and again; it can be annual or weekly. Muslims have two annual Eids and one weekly Eid, which is Friday. Other than these, no Eid is established from the Qur’an and Sunnah, such as Eid Milad or Eid Ghadir, etc.; all these are self-invented and innovations.
➌ {وَاٰيَةًمِّنْكَ:} That is, establish proof for Your oneness and the truth of Your Prophet’s messengership. (Kabir)
➍ {وَاَنْتَخَيْرُالرّٰزِقِيْنَ:} Because in reality, You alone are the Provider; there is not a single provider besides You. All eat only what You have given, or give it to others.

114. 1. In Islamic laws, the meaning of Eid has never been that it is a national festival day in which, by violating all moral restrictions and the rules of Shariah, joy and happiness are expressed in an unruly manner, illuminations are made, and celebrations are held, as is commonly understood today and festivals are celebrated accordingly. Here too, when Prophet Isa (Jesus) ؑ expressed the desire to celebrate Eid on this day, his intention was that we should praise and glorify Allah and proclaim His greatness. Some people of innovation try to justify the celebration of Mawlid (the Prophet’s birthday) from this Eid of the Table Spread, whereas firstly, this is an incident from the Shariah before ours, and if Islam wanted to maintain it, it would have been clarified; secondly, it was merely the Prophet’s expression of desire to declare it as Eid, and the Prophet is authorized to declare Shariah rulings only by Allah’s command; thirdly, the meaning and concept of Eid is as mentioned in the above lines, whereas none of these things are found in the celebration of Mawlid. Therefore, there is no doubt that Mawlid is an innovation. In Islam, there are only two Eids that have been prescribed: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. There is no third Eid besides these.

114. Jesus prayed, "O Allah, our Lord! Send down to us a table spread (with food) from the heaven, to be a festival for us—for the first of us and the last of us—and a sign from You. And provide for us, for You are the best of providers [164]."
[164] But even after Sayyiduna Isa ؑ explained to the disciples, they did not desist from their demand. Finally, Isa ؑ presented their request before his Lord and prayed that sustenance be granted to these people from the unseen, which would become a memorable day of joy for all those before and after. And this would be such a miracle that everyone would witness it with their own eyes.
