إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَغُضُّونَ أَصْوَٰتَهُمْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱمْتَحَنَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ۚ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ ﴿3﴾
Verily, those who lower their voices in the presence of Allâh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), they are the ones whose hearts Allâh has tested for piety. For them is forgiveness and a great reward.
إِنَّ inna Indeed

أَصْوَٰتَهُمْ aṣwātahum their voices

قُلُوبَهُمْ qulūbahum their hearts
لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ۚ lilttaqwā for righteousness

مَّغْفِرَةٌۭ maghfiratun (is) forgiveness
وَأَجْرٌ wa-ajrun and a reward
عَظِيمٌ ʿaẓīmun great

(Ayah 3){ اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يَغُضُّوْنَ اَصْوَاتَهُمْ … :} In this, there is praise for those who, while observing respect and honor for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), used to keep their voices low in his presence, as has been mentioned regarding Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). That is, Allah Almighty tested the piety of their hearts and found them to be fully successful in the test of righteousness, just as gold is tested by being put into fire and comes out pure, so it is said that we have tested its purity. From this, it is understood that whoever does not keep his voice low in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), his heart is devoid of piety; then, how far from piety and faith will be the one who, after hearing the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him), raises his voice against it.

3. 1. In this, there is praise for those people who, keeping in mind the greatness and majesty of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, used to lower their voices.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah’s Messenger are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety [4]. For them is forgiveness and a great reward.

[4] This verse can have two meanings: one is that only those people can show respect and reverence for the Prophet who, on the basis of taqwa, have already passed the test of submitting themselves before the command of Allah and His Messenger; and the second meaning is that showing respect and reverence for the Prophet itself is clear proof that taqwa exists in the hearts of these people, and through this action, Allah will continue to increase their taqwa. From this verse and the aforementioned hadith, the great virtue of the Companions is established.
