وَلَوْ قَـٰتَلَكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوَلَّوُا۟ ٱلْأَدْبَـٰرَ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُونَ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا ﴿22﴾
And if those who disbelieve fight against you, they certainly would have turned their backs; then they would have found neither a Walî (protector, guardian) nor a helper.
وَلَوْ walaw And if
قَـٰتَلَكُمُ qātalakumu fight you
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve
لَوَلَّوُا۟ lawallawū surely they would turn
ٱلْأَدْبَـٰرَ l-adbāra the backs
ثُمَّ thumma Then
لَا not
يَجِدُونَ yajidūna they would find
وَلِيًّۭا waliyyan any protector
وَلَا walā and not
نَصِيرًۭا naṣīran any helper

(Ayah 22) ➊ { وَ لَوْ قٰتَلَكُمُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَوَلَّوُا الْاَدْبَارَ:} Previously, Allah Almighty mentioned that He restrained the hands of the disbelievers from you so that they refrained from fighting; now it is stated that the apparent submission in making the treaty at Hudaybiyyah was not due to cowardice or out of fear that the Muslims might be defeated, but rather, there were many wisdoms considered in it, some of which have already been mentioned and some are being stated ahead. Thus, it is said that if, at that moment, the disbelievers had fought you, they would certainly have turned their backs and fled, and Makkah would have been conquered right then, but this was against the wisdom intended.
{ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُوْنَ وَلِيًّا وَّ لَا نَصِيْرًا:’’ ثُمَّ ‘‘} The meaning of the word (then) is that after this, no matter how much time passes and no matter how many of these polytheists there may be, at no time will they find any supporter nor any helper.

22. 1. This is being said about the anticipated battle at Hudaybiyyah, that if these Quraysh of Makkah had not made peace but had chosen the path of war, they would have turned their backs and fled; they would have had no helper.

If those who disbelieve had fought you, they would certainly have turned their backs [33], then they would not find any protector or helper.

[33] That is, if the disbelievers at Hudaybiyyah had confronted the Muslims in battle, Allah was fully capable of defeating the disbelievers and granting victory to the Muslims. However, instead of war, a treaty took place, in which there were many other underlying benefits. Because of these, Allah did not allow war to occur.
