Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 8) ➊ The meaning of {وَالَّذِيْنَكَفَرُوْافَتَعْسًالَّهُمْوَاَضَلَّاَعْمَالَهُمْ: ’’ تَعْسًا ‘‘} is to stumble and fall and then not be able to get up, or to fall into a pit and perish. (Mufradat) Thus, Allah makes firm the feet of those who help His religion, whereas, on the contrary, the disbelievers are thrown down on their faces and destroyed, and the believers are helped while all the deeds of the disbelievers are wasted and all their efforts come to nothing. (Kilani) ➋ The verb of {’’ تَعْسًا‘‘} comes from both {’’ مَنَعَ ‘‘} and {’’سَمِعَ‘‘}. {’’تَعْسًا‘‘} is a verbal noun (masdar) used as an absolute object, whose verb must be omitted: {’’ أَيْتَعِسُوْاتَعْسًا۔‘‘} then by omitting {’’ تَعِسُوْا ‘‘}, the masdar {’’تَعْسًا‘‘} is made its substitute, and the pronoun for the third person masculine plural, the subject of the verb, is made explicit. Ibn Hisham said that in {’’ لَهُمْ ‘‘}, the "lam" is for clarification, which is for explaining the subject of {’’ تَعْسًا‘‘}. The meaning is this: they perished, perished terribly.
