Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Verily, those who have turned back (have apostatised) as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them - Shaitân (Satan) has beautified for them (their false hopes), and (Allâh) prolonged their term (age).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 25) ➊ { اِنَّالَّذِيْنَارْتَدُّوْاعَلٰۤىاَدْبَارِهِمْ … :} By this are meant the hypocrites who, after the truth became clear and after professing Islam, chose the path of disbelief and apostasy by avoiding jihad. ➋ { الشَّيْطٰنُسَوَّلَلَهُمْوَاَمْلٰىلَهُمْ:} That is, Satan made their disbelief, apostasy, and fleeing from jihad seem attractive to them and promised them a long respite, meaning he put into their hearts that if they did not participate in jihad, they would live for a long time and enjoy the comforts of the world. Satan’s very task is to mislead by giving desires and false hopes. (See Nisa: 119, 120) Whereas they should have understood that death comes at its appointed time, and there is not a moment’s advancement or delay in it, so what benefit is there in fleeing from jihad?
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
25. 1. By this are meant the hypocrites who, by avoiding jihad, openly displayed disbelief and apostasy. 25. 2. Its subject is also Satan, that is, مدلھم فی الامل ووعدھم طول العمر, meaning he involved them in long hopes and deceived them into thinking that they still have a long life ahead, so why risk their lives in battle; or the subject is Allah, that Allah gave them respite, meaning He did not seize them immediately.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
25. Those to whom guidance became clear, then they turned back thereafter—Satan made their deeds seem fair to them and gave them false hopes [29] (of long life).
[29] That is, Satan has instilled in them the notion that if you participate in jihad, it is tantamount to inviting your own death. Besides this, there will also be financial loss. Then, even if the Muslims achieve victory, what benefit will there be for them in the event of death? Therefore, the only sure way to avoid financial loss, to keep oneself safe, and to live a long life is to adopt the path of avoiding jihad.
