And when he learns something of Our Verses (this Qur’ân), he makes them a jest. For such there will be a humiliating torment.

(Ayah 9) ➊ In {وَاِذَاعَلِمَمِنْاٰيٰتِنَاشَيْـًٔااتَّخَذَهَاهُزُوًا: ’’ اتَّخَذَهَا ‘‘}, the pronoun can also refer back to {’’ هَا ‘‘ ’’ شَيْـًٔا ‘‘ }, because although the word { ’’ اٰيٰتِنَا ‘‘} is masculine, what is meant by it is some {’’آيَةٌ‘‘} (ayah), therefore the feminine pronoun {’’ هَا ‘‘} has been used, and it can also refer back to {’’ اٰيٰتِنَا ‘‘}. In the first case, the meaning will be that when he comes to know any verse from among Our verses (which he does not understand correctly or from which he derives a distorted meaning), he makes it a subject of mockery. In the second case, the meaning is that when he comes to know any verse from among Our verses, he does not suffice with mocking only that verse, but makes all Our verses a subject of mockery. For example, when he comes across something in the Noble Qur’an whose meaning he can distort and mock, he, while mocking all the verses, says that all the verses of the Qur’an are like this. This is a description of his being the worst “affak” and “atheem,” that after hearing the divine verses, not only does he persist in disbelief, but also unjustly mocks them, and to such an extent that he makes them a subject of mockery. ➋ { اُولٰٓىِٕكَلَهُمْعَذَابٌمُّهِيْنٌ:} In return for their disrespect of the divine verses, there is a humiliating punishment for them. In this verse, due to their mockery and disrespect of the verses, the news of a humiliating punishment has been given for them.

9. 1. That is, firstly he does not listen to the Qur'an attentively at all, and if any point happens to reach his ears or any matter comes to his knowledge, he makes it a subject of mockery. This is either due to his lack of understanding and foolishness, or due to insistence and arrogance upon disbelief and sin.

And when something of Our verses reaches him, he takes it in mockery. For such people there will be a humiliating punishment.
[10] Which Verses Do the Polytheists Mock:
The chiefs of Quraysh were not willing to listen to even a single verse of the Quran for the sake of admonition. However, they would certainly seek out those verses in which they could find some point to mock the divine verses. Their primary target of ridicule were those verses in which resurrection, the Day of Judgment, and the gathering and resurrection were mentioned. Sayyiduna Khabbab bin Aratt had to receive some wages from ‘As bin Wa’il Sahmi. When he demanded his wages, ‘As said: "Abandon the religion of Muhammadﷺ and you will get your wages." Sayyiduna Khabbabؓ replied: "I will not abandon it even until the day you are resurrected again." ‘As said: "Alright, then when I am resurrected again, I will settle your account." Then, when the verse was revealed that "Allah took His servant by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa," the disbelievers raised a great uproar and said: "Tell us, what madness of his remains now?" And when the verse was revealed that the food of the people of Hell will be the tree of Zaqqum, the disbelievers also began to mock. And when the verse was revealed that there are nineteen keepers appointed over Hell, a certain strongman said to his companions: "I alone will handle eighteen of them; will none of you be able to handle even one?" And when the verse was revealed that the polytheists and their deities will all be thrown into Hell, Abdullah bin al-Zib’ara said: "Then Sayyiduna ‘Isaؑ will also go to Hell. In that case, our deities are better than him." And there are many more such verses, and the disbelievers of Makkah were always in search of such verses that could be mocked.
