Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 16) {يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرٰى اِنَّا مُنْتَقِمُوْنَ: ’’إِنَّ‘‘} is to state the reason. That is, We removed the punishment of famine, but on the Day of Resurrection, when We seize you with the great grasp, it will never be removed, because We will be taking retribution. The worldly grasp was to bring you back from disbelief, so after that you were given the opportunity to repent, as He said: « وَ لَنُذِيْقَنَّهُمْ مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ الْاَدْنٰى دُوْنَ الْعَذَابِ الْاَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُوْنَ» [ السجدۃ : ۲۱ ] "And surely We will make them taste a portion of the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return." But the great grasp of the Day of Resurrection will be for retribution, after which you will not be given respite. Tabari has mentioned with his chain that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: [ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُوْدٍ ’’ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرٰى‘‘ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ، وَ أَنَا أَقُوْلُ هِيَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ ] [ الطبري : ۲۱ /۲۷، ح : ۳۱۳۳۸ ] "Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that {’’ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرٰى‘‘} (the great grasp) is the Day of Badr, and I say that it is the Day of Resurrection." Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) has declared the chain of this statement to be Sahih. The researcher of his Tafsir, Dr. Hikmat bin Basheer, has also declared the chain of this statement to be Sahih. In reality, here the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) is stronger.

The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

16. 1. This refers to the seizing in the Battle of Badr, in which seventy disbelievers were killed and seventy were taken captive. According to another interpretation, this severe seizing will occur on the Day of Resurrection. Imam Shawkani states that this is a mention of the specific seizing that took place in the Battle of Badr, because it is mentioned in the context of the Quraysh, although on the Day of Resurrection Allah will also seize severely, but that seizing will be general and every disobedient person will be included in it.
