(Ayah 53) { فَلَوْلَاۤاُلْقِيَعَلَيْهِاَسْوِرَةٌمِّنْذَهَبٍ … : ’’ اَسْوِرَةٌ ‘‘ ’’سِوَارٌ‘‘} is the plural, meaning bangles. The purpose was that neither would Musa (peace be upon him) wear gold bangles, nor would angels come with him, and nor would we have to believe in him. For believing in our Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the disbelievers also set the condition of a house of gold and bringing Allah Almighty and the angels before them, along with many other things. It is said: « وَقَالُوْالَنْنُّؤْمِنَلَكَحَتّٰىتَفْجُرَلَنَامِنَالْاَرْضِيَنْۢبُوْعًا (90) اَوْتَكُوْنَلَكَجَنَّةٌمِّنْنَّخِيْلٍوَّعِنَبٍفَتُفَجِّرَالْاَنْهٰرَخِلٰلَهَاتَفْجِيْرًا (91) اَوْتُسْقِطَالسَّمَآءَكَمَازَعَمْتَعَلَيْنَاكِسَفًااَوْتَاْتِيَبِاللّٰهِوَالْمَلٰٓىِٕكَةِقَبِيْلًا (92) اَوْيَكُوْنَلَكَبَيْتٌمِّنْزُخْرُفٍاَوْتَرْقٰىفِيالسَّمَآءِ »[ بني إسرائیل : ۹۰ تا ۹۳ ] “And they said, ‘We will never believe in you until you cause a spring to gush forth for us from the earth, or you have a garden of date-palms and grapes, and you cause rivers to gush forth in their midst abundantly, or you cause the sky to fall upon us in pieces as you have claimed, or you bring Allah and the angels before us, or you have a house of gold, or you ascend into the sky.’” The reality is that the call of all the prophets (peace be upon them) was one, and all had to pass through similar stages in their mission, which is why Allah Almighty has repeatedly mentioned the stories of the previous messengers, especially Musa (peace be upon him), so that you (peace and blessings be upon him) may be comforted and act with patience and steadfastness, and so that the disbelievers of your time may take heed from the fate of the previous disbelieving nations and refrain from disbelief.

53. 1. In that era, the kings of Egypt and Persia used to wear gold bangles to highlight their distinctive glory and special status. Similarly, gold bangles were placed on the hands of tribal chiefs and gold collars and chains were put around their necks. In this context, Pharaoh said regarding Musa ؑ that if he had any status and distinctive glory, he should have had gold bangles on his hands.
53. 2. Who would confirm that he is Allah’s messenger or, like the kings, would be with him to highlight his glory.

53. (If he is a messenger,) then why have gold bracelets not been bestowed upon him, or why has a company of angels [52] not come with him?"
[52] Pharaoh Presenting a Comparison Between Himself and Sayyiduna Musa Before His People:
In ancient times, it was common practice for kings, nawabs, and rajas to wear bracelets of gold and jewels, and when they were pleased with any of their courtiers, they would also bestow bracelets upon them as a reward and honor. Whenever they went out for excursions or journeys, there would be protective military guards before and behind them, and this custom is still common today. In comparing himself with Sayyiduna Musa ؑ, Pharaoh mentioned, firstly, wealth and authority. Secondly, he objected to the prophethood of Musa ؑ by saying that if he were truly Allah’s deputy on earth, then at the very least, as a sign, he should have been adorned with golden bracelets, or at least, there should have been angelic guards before and behind him for his protection. If none of these things are present, then how can he be Allah’s deputy? Has your intellect become so dull that you have started accepting his words over mine?
