And they said: "If it had been the Will of the Most Gracious (Allâh), we should not have worshipped them (false deities)." They have no knowledge whatsoever of that. They do nothing but lie!

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 20) ➊ { وَقَالُوْالَوْشَآءَالرَّحْمٰنُمَاعَبَدْنٰهُمْ:} This was another argument of the disbelievers of Makkah regarding their misguidance and polytheistic insolence, meaning that instead of considering themselves guilty, they placed all the blame on divine destiny, saying that it was Allah’s will and He had written in our fate that we should consider angels as goddesses and worship them. Such a false argument from divine destiny has always been the practice of those who follow falsehood, and it still is today. Whereas Allah’s will is one thing and His approval is another. If it were as these polytheists claimed, then what need was there for Allah to send messengers and reveal books to prohibit shirk? (Ibn Kathir) For further details, see the exegesis of Surah Al-An’am (148) and Surah An-Nahl (35). ➋ { مَالَهُمْبِذٰلِكَمِنْعِلْمٍ:} That is, they do not understand the reality of destiny and misinterpret Allah’s will. Shah Abdul Qadir writes: “That is, it is true that nothing happens without Allah’s will, but that does not mean it is good. He created food (sustenance) and also poison, but who eats poison?” (Mawdhih) ➌ {اِنْهُمْاِلَّايَخْرُصُوْنَ:} That is, out of ignorance, they make such statements that have no basis.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
20. 1. That is, relying on Allah's will on their own accord, this is one of their major arguments because apparently it is true that without Allah's will, no action happens nor can it happen. But they are unaware of the fact that His will is different from His pleasure. Every action certainly happens only by His will, but He is pleased only with those actions which He has commanded, not with every action that a person does by Allah's will. A person commits theft, adultery, oppression, and major sins; if Allah wills, He may not even give someone the ability to commit these sins, immediately seize his hand, stop his feet, or take away his sight. But these are forms of compulsion, whereas He has given man the freedom of will and choice so that he may be tested. However, this choice Allah will not take back from him in this world, but its punishment will be given on the Day of Judgment.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
20. And they say, "If Allah had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have no knowledge of this; they do nothing but guess [20].
[20] The Argument of Divine Will for Sins is Invalid:
It has always been the practice of the ignorant that they use the Divine Will as a pretext for their reprehensible beliefs and sinful actions. The reason for this is their ignorance in not understanding the difference between Allah’s Will (Mashi’ah) and Allah’s Pleasure (Rida), and thus they present such arguments. In this sense, even a tyrant or a robber could say that whatever I am doing, Allah is pleased with it, that is why I am given the opportunity to do such things. And in this sense, there would be no evil left in the world; rather, everything would have to be considered good. However, no one accepts this notion. Disbelief, polytheism, and mischief are widespread in the world, even though Allah absolutely does not like these things. Therefore, whatever is happening in the world is indeed under the Divine Will, but what ought to happen, or what is Allah’s Pleasure, is mentioned in Allah’s Book.
