Or He gives them both sons and daughters together, and He makes whom He wills barren [70]. Surely, He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful.
[70] Man’s Helplessness Regarding Offspring:
The previous verse began by stating that the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone. In other words, this means that all matters of control in this universe are solely in Allah’s hands. Then, only one aspect of these matters is presented as evidence: observe how helpless man is regarding his offspring. It is a natural desire of man to have children. But if Allah makes someone barren or does not wish to grant offspring, no matter how many efforts one makes, he will not have children. His second desire is that he should have sons and not daughters. But Allah keeps giving some people only daughters, and in this way, sometimes He breaks the pride of the arrogant, and they cannot do anything to remedy it. And to some, despite the desire for even a single daughter, He gives only sons. Sometimes someone has twins, and sometimes three, four, or five children are born at once. Especially since the talk of family planning has started in the world, such incidents have become frequent. This, as it were, is a slap on the face of those who act against nature from the Divine Power. In short, despite the desire for children, man is so helpless in this matter that no being other than Allah, no idol, no shrine, no saint, or prophet can help him in any way. In fact, even prophets themselves are just as helpless in this regard as ordinary people. For example, Sayyiduna Lut ؑ and Sayyiduna Shu‘ayb ؑ had only daughters, not a single son.
