مَّا يُقَالُ لَكَ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ قِيلَ لِلرُّسُلِ مِن قَبْلِكَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو مَغْفِرَةٍ وَذُو عِقَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ﴿43﴾
Nothing is said to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) except what was said to the Messengers before you. Verily, your Lord is the Possessor of Forgiveness, and (also) the Possessor of Painful Punishment.

(Ayah 43) ➊ { مَا يُقَالُ لَكَ اِلَّا مَا قَدْ قِيْلَ لِلرُّسُلِ …:} In this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is comforted that if the disbelievers of Makkah call you a magician, poet, soothsayer, madman, liar, arrogant, or by any other such names and cause you distress, then be at ease; there is nothing among the names they have given you that was not used as a taunt against the messengers before you. Nor are you the first messenger to be denied, nor the first person to bear hardship for the sake of Allah. In Surah Adh-Dhariyat, it is said: « كَذٰلِكَ مَاۤ اَتَى الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِّنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا قَالُوْا سَاحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ (52) اَتَوَاصَوْا بِهٖ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُوْنَ» [الذاریات : ۵۲، ۵۳ ] "Similarly, there never came to those before them any messenger but they said: 'A magician or a madman.' Have they passed this down as an instruction to one another? (No), rather they themselves are a transgressing people." The messengers bore patience over all such words of the disbelievers and continued to convey Allah’s message with full determination; this is your duty as well. It is said: « فَاصْبِرْ كَمَا صَبَرَ اُولُوا الْعَزْمِ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ وَ لَا تَسْتَعْجِلْ لَّهُمْ » [ الأحقاف : ۳۵ ] "So be patient as those of determination among the messengers were patient and do not seek to hasten for them (the punishment)."

{ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُوْ مَغْفِرَةٍ وَّ ذُوْ عِقَابٍ اَلِيْمٍ: } That is, despite such harm and abusive language, if these people repent and believe, then your Lord is Most Forgiving ({مَغْفِرَةٍ } the tanween is for glorification), and if they persist in their disbelief, then He is also the Possessor of a most painful punishment. It can also mean that it is not your task to repay them for their abusive language; it is Our authority and Our will whether We grant them the ability to believe and forgive them, or leave them in disbelief and make them taste a painful punishment, as He said: « لَيْسَ لَكَ مِنَ الْاَمْرِ شَيْءٌ اَوْ يَتُوْبَ عَلَيْهِمْ اَوْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ فَاِنَّهُمْ ظٰلِمُوْنَ » [ آل عمران : ۱۲۸ ] "You have no part in the matter, whether He turns to them in mercy or punishes them, for indeed they are wrongdoers."

43. 1. That is, whatever the previous nations said to deny their prophets—such as "he is a sorcerer," "he is mad," "he is a liar," and so on—the disbelievers of Makkah said the same things about you. This is, in a way, to comfort you that your denial and the attribution of sorcery, lying, and madness to you is nothing new; this has always happened with every prophet, as stated elsewhere (مَآ اَتَى الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِّنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا قَالُوْا سَاحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ 52؀ۚ اَتَوَاصَوْا بِهٖ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُوْنَ 53؀ۚ) 51. Az-Zariyat: 53-52). The second meaning is that these things were also said to the messengers before you because all the divine laws have agreed upon these matters, and in fact, the primary call of all was to monotheism and sincerity. 43. 2. That is, for the people of faith and monotheism who are deserving of forgiveness.

43. 3. For those who are disbelievers and enemies of Allah's prophets. This verse is also similar to the verse in Surah Al-Hijr.

What is being said to you is the same as was said to the messengers before you [53]. Surely, your Lord is Forgiving, and also the Possessor of painful [54] punishment.

What Did the Messengers Have to Hear from Their People?

The revelation of such verses occurred from time to time and repeatedly, and it was necessary as well. Because the entire thirteen-year period of Prophethood passed under the persecutions of the disbelievers. One form of these persecutions was mockery and objections. The mockery was directed at the signs of Allah, at the Messenger of Allah, and at the Muslims as well. For example, such as: "Is this the person whom Allah found for Prophethood? He is a sorcerer, a soothsayer, a poet, a madman." Similarly, "If you do not desist from this work of yours, we will expel you from our town or even kill you." Or, "Your followers seem to be lowly and despicable people. We do not even tolerate sitting with you in their presence, let alone listen to your words." Such things, which you keep hearing from the disbelievers, were also heard by the previous Messengers.

[54] This is indeed the attribute of forbearance and forgiveness of Allah Almighty, that even after seeing His religion and His obedient servants being insulted in this way, He continues to pardon them and grants them respite. Otherwise, being the Possessor of Retribution, it would have been appropriate for Him to destroy them immediately with a painful punishment. But He is deferring this punishment, and all of this is happening under His will.
