Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 17) ➊ {وَ اَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَهَدَيْنٰهُمْ …:} For the introduction of the people of Thamud, see Surah Al-A'raf (73 to 79). For the explanation of guidance, see the commentary of Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayah: { اِهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيْمَ }. That is, We showed them the path of truth, but instead of accepting guidance, they preferred to remain blind and astray.

{فَاَخَذَتْهُمْ صٰعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ الْهُوْنِ …:’’ الْهُوْنِ ‘‘} and {’’اَلْهَوَانُ‘‘} mean disgrace; this is a verbal noun used as an intensive active participle. The punishment that befell Thamud is sometimes called {’’ الرَّجْفَةُ ‘‘} (earthquake), sometimes {’’ الصَّيْحَةُ ‘‘} (severe cry), and here it is called a thunderbolt. From this, it is understood that it was a severe cry in which there was a thunderbolt and flame, along with a violent earthquake, due to which their livers burst and all of them perished. This humiliating punishment was the result of their evil deeds.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

17. 1. That is, they were invited to Tawheed, its evidences were made clear before them, and through their prophet, Hazrat Salih (عليه السلام), the proof was completed against them.

17. 2. That is, they opposed to the extent that they even slaughtered the she-camel which, as a miracle, had appeared from the rock at their request and was a proof of the truthfulness of the prophet.

17. 2. صاعقۃ refers to a severe punishment. This severe punishment came upon them in the form of a shriek and an earthquake, which destroyed and ruined them with disgrace and humiliation.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

As for Thamud, We showed them the right path, but they preferred blindness [21] over guidance. So the thunderbolt of a humiliating punishment seized them as a recompense for what they used to do.

The Punishment of Earthquake and Cry Upon the People of Thamud:

They are also called the second ‘Ad, and to them Sayyiduna Salih ؑ was sent. They demanded from Sayyiduna Salih ؑ that a she-camel should come forth from the mountain. Allah Almighty fulfilled this demand. Through this, they became certain that there was some supernatural being supporting Sayyiduna Salih ؑ, and that he was indeed a Messenger of Allah. But despite all this, they did not accept the guidance brought by Sayyiduna Salih ؑ, nor were they willing to abandon their ignorant and polytheistic customs. These people were in no way inferior to their predecessor nation, ‘Ad, in stature, build, and strength. They were excellent experts in the art of construction and stone carving. They would carve not only houses out of the mountains, but also make roads and had settled entire communities within the mountains themselves. When their days were numbered due to their disobedience, a double punishment befell them: from below, an earthquake, which caused cracks and fissures in their houses inside the mountains, and from above, a thunderous blast so severe that their livers burst.
