Have they not travelled through the earth and seen what was the end of those before them? They were more in number than them and mightier in strength, and in the traces (they have left behind them) in the land; yet all that they used to earn availed them not.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 82) ➊ { اَفَلَمْ يَسِيْرُوْا فِي الْاَرْضِ … :} For its exegesis, see the exegesis of Surah Ar-Rum, Ayah (9).
{ فَمَاۤ اَغْنٰى عَنْهُمْ مَّا كَانُوْا يَكْسِبُوْنَ:} That is, when Allah's punishment came upon them, their stature, physical strength, abundance of wealth and property, magnificent examples of architecture, and other technical skills could not benefit them in any way. Then, O people of Makkah! You, who are weaker and lesser than them in every respect, how will you be able to escape when Allah's punishment comes?

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

82. 1. That is, those nations who disobeyed Allah and denied His messengers. Let them look at the traces and ruins of their settlements which are right there in their regions—what was their end?

82. 2. That is, in the form of buildings, factories, and fields, their ruins make it clear that even in the field of craftsmanship, they were superior to you.

82. 3. In "فما اغنی", "ما" can be interrogative or negative. The meaning of the negative is clear from the translation. According to the interrogative, the meaning would be: What benefit did it bring them? The point is the same—that their earnings did not avail them at all.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

82. Have they not traveled through the land and seen what was the end of those who came before them? They were more numerous than them, stronger in power, and left greater traces on the earth [102], yet all these things were of no avail to them.

The Grandeur of Previous Nations:

The previous nations surpassed these disbelievers of Makkah by far in stature, physical strength, architecture, and agriculture. And these people are nothing compared to them. But when those nations denied the messengers of Allah and, instead of acknowledging Allah’s favor, turned to rebellion, then when Allah’s punishment came upon them, all their qualities, grandeur, and glory amounted to nothing. So, being weaker and lesser than them, why are you showing such arrogance? And how will you be able to escape the consequences of your deeds?
