سُوْرَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ

Surah Ghafir (40) — Ayah 56

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَـٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ إِن فِى صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَـٰلِغِيهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ ﴿56﴾
Verily those who dispute about the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride [to accept you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) as a Messenger of Allâh and to obey you]. They will never have it (i.e. Prophethood which Allâh has bestowed upon you). So seek refuge in Allâh (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم from the arrogants). Verily, it is He Who is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
إِنَّ inna Indeed

فِىٓ concerning
ءَايَـٰتِ āyāti (the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
بِغَيْرِ bighayri without
سُلْطَـٰنٍ sul'ṭānin any authority
أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ atāhum (which) came to them

فِى (is) in
صُدُورِهِمْ ṣudūrihim their breasts
إِلَّا illā but
كِبْرٌۭ kib'run greatness
مَّا not
هُم hum they
بِبَـٰلِغِيهِ ۚ bibālighīhi (can) reach it
فَٱسْتَعِذْ fa-is'taʿidh So seek refuge
بِٱللَّهِ ۖ bil-lahi in Allah
إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed He
هُوَ huwa He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ l-samīʿu (is) the All-Hearer
ٱلْبَصِيرُ l-baṣīru the All-Seer

(Ayah 56) ➊ {اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يُجَادِلُوْنَ فِيْۤ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ … :} In this, comfort has been given to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Muslims that those who argue and dispute to reject the signs of Allah, the reason for this is not that these signs are difficult to understand, or that the arguments presented for their subjects (such as monotheism, the Hereafter, and prophethood, etc.) are few or weak, but rather the cause is that these people consider themselves great and desire and strive to elevate their own status very high. They are not willing to humble themselves before Allah, nor do they accept to believe in the Messenger and become obedient to him. Thus, in order to maintain their false pride, they deny the Messenger, reject the truth, look down upon the Muslims with contempt, and adopt every lowly tactic to humiliate them.

{ مَا هُمْ بِبَالِغِيْهِ:} With "باء" the negation in {’’ مَا ‘‘} is being emphasized, therefore it has been translated as "which they will never attain." That is, the greatness these false and insignificant people have imagined for themselves in opposition to Allah and His Messenger will never be granted to them, nor will they ever reach such a status in any way.

{ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّٰهِ:} That is, just as Musa (peace be upon him) sought refuge with his Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning, upon Pharaoh's threat to kill him, in the same way, you too should seek Allah's refuge from all such arrogant people and from their apparent opposition and hidden conspiracies.

{ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْبَصِيْرُ:} He is the One Who hears every loud and soft word and sees everything open and hidden. He alone can protect you from every kind of harm, and He will protect you.

56. 1. That is, those people who argue and dispute without any heavenly proof, they do so merely out of arrogance; however, the purpose they seek from this—that the truth becomes weak and falsehood becomes strong—will not be achieved by them.

Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without any authority that has come to them, there is nothing in their hearts but arrogance which they will never attain. So seek refuge in Allah [74]. Surely, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.

The Meaning of Allah's Signs:

Here, by the signs of Allah are meant the proofs of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) and the proofs of resurrection after death. Because it was regarding these two matters that the disbelievers of Makkah would most often repeat themselves, engaging in pointless arguments and mockery. Allah Almighty, addressing them, said that they have no rational proof on the basis of which they could argue logically; rather, the real reason for their dispute is their arrogance. They think that if they accept the words of the Messenger, then they will have to become obedient to him. And it is this pride of the self that is preventing them from believing. But the greatness that they are so concerned about retaining cannot remain with them. Because honor and disgrace are in the hands of Allah. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger can never attain honor. The lofty position in which they imagine themselves to be, they will inevitably have to descend from that position and be humiliated.

[74] That is, keep seeking refuge with Allah from the evil of these disputing arrogant ones, Who is watching every one of their plots and every one of their mischiefs, and is also hearing their words. Then He has full power to punish them and to protect you from their evil.
