Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 84) ➊ {فَقَاتِلْ فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ لَا تُكَلَّفُ اِلَّا نَفْسَكَ … :} In the previous verses, encouragement for jihad was given, then the activities of the hypocrites were mentioned, and now in this verse it is stated that you should not care whether these hypocrites are with you or not; your responsibility is that you yourself set out for jihad and also encourage other believers. Abu Ishaq narrates that I asked Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): "The person who attacks the polytheists, does he throw himself into destruction?" He replied: "No, because Allah Almighty sent His Messenger and said to him: «{ فَقَاتِلْ فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ لَا تُكَلَّفُ اِلَّا نَفْسَكَ And the verse you are referring to: «{ وَ لَا تُلْقُوْا بِاَيْدِيْكُمْ اِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ [ البقرۃ : ۱۹۵ ] that relates to spending (or not spending) in the way of Allah." [ مسند أحمد : 281/4، ح : ۱۸۵۰۶ ] From this it is understood that people make up many conditions for jihad on their own.

{ عَسَى اللّٰهُ اَنْ يَّكُفَّ بَاْسَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا: } For Allah Almighty, the word {”عَسَى“} is used in the sense of certainty, so in the verse it is being promised that soon the power of the disbelievers will be broken and the Muslims will be granted dominance.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

The exegesis of this verse has been done along with the previous verse.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

So fight in the way of Allah; you are not responsible except for yourself [117]. And encourage the believers. It may be that Allah will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. And Allah is stronger in might and more severe in punishment.

[117] That is, if you are always ready to fight in the way of Allah and continue to encourage the Muslims as well, then surely the Muslims will join you and become determined for jihad. The effect of this will be that the enemy, seeing your movements and activities, will refrain from the intention of fighting on their own. And if this does not happen and they resolve to attack, then Allah is capable of dealing with them and can punish them severely (as actually happened in the Battle of the Trench). In any case, you should always be prepared for jihad.
