Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 52,51) ➊ { اَلَمْ تَرَ اِلَى الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوْا نَصِيْبًا مِّنَ الْكِتٰبِ … :} Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Jibt is meant magic, and by Taghut is meant Satan." [ بخاری، التفسیر، باب قولہ : «و إن کنتم مرضی أو علی سفر» قبل ح : ۴۵۸۳، معلقًا ] Johari said in Al-Sihah: The word Jibt is used for idol, soothsayer, magician, and other such things." Similarly, in a hadith it is mentioned that taking omens by making birds fly and drawing lines on the ground for divination are included in Jibt. [ أبو داوٗد، الطب، باب فی الخط وزجر الطیر : ۳۹۰۷ ] And by Taghut is meant Satan, and this word is used for anyone who invites to sin. In Arabia, there used to be spokesmen for idols, who would falsely convey messages from them and mislead people; they were called Taghut. See also Surah Al-Baqarah (252).
➋ When the Jews opposed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they established contact with the polytheists of Makkah and began to say to them that your religion is better than the religion of the Muslims. All this was due to the jealousy that prophethood and religious leadership had been given to others besides themselves. Allah Almighty blamed them in these verses.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

51. 1. In this verse, astonishment is being expressed at another action of the Jews: despite being People of the Book, they believe in (جبت) idols, soothsayers, or magicians (false deities), and consider the disbelievers of Makkah to be more rightly guided than the Muslims. All these aforementioned meanings have been given for جبت. In a hadith it is mentioned: "ان العیافۃ والطرق والطیرۃ من الجبت" — "Taking omens from birds, drawing lines, taking bad omens" — that is, all these are satanic acts, and these things were common among the Jews. One meaning of طاغوت is also given as Satan; in reality, the worship of false deities is actually following Satan. Therefore, Satan is certainly included in the meaning of طاغوت.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

51. Have you not considered those who were given a portion of the Book? They believe in Jibt [83] and Taghut, and say about the disbelievers that they are better guided than the believers.

[83] Jibt and Taghut
Jibt is, in fact, a comprehensive term for superstitions and false beliefs, which includes magic, charms, amulets, incantations, the effects of planets on human life, fortune-telling, talismans, inscriptions, and amulets, etc. Taghut is every false power and system to whose obedience people are compelled, and in opposition to obedience to Allah, they are forced or made to obey that individual, institution, or government, and people accept them in defiance of divine commands. These can be village chiefs, spiritual leaders and elders, false systems like socialism or democracy, or tyrannical kings like Pharaoh and Nimrod.

The Jews Considered the Polytheists Better Than the Muslims:

That is, the majority of these Jews and Christians are engrossed in superstitions and charms, and instead of believing in Allah, they submit to Taghut. Despite being in such a misguided state themselves, they say to other disbelievers (such as polytheists) that you are better than these believers (Muslims) and more rightly guided than them. That is, while they themselves are completely immersed in misguidance, they are giving certificates of being more rightly guided to the polytheists than to the Muslims. Remember that whenever the polytheists of Makkah attacked Madinah, the Jews always supported them verbally and practically. On such an occasion, the polytheists asked the Jews, "Tell us truthfully, are these Muslims better or are we?" And they were asked this because the Jews had an intellectual reputation throughout Arabia. But these faithless ones, merely to please the polytheists, would give such an answer. Whereas, in reality, they knew very well that shirk is an unforgivable crime in the sight of Allah, and Muslims, being monotheists, are a thousand times better than the polytheists.
