And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’ân) that when you hear the Verses of Allâh being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allâh will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 140) {وَ قَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتٰبِ … :} This command had already been revealed earlier in Surah Al-An'am (6:68), thus it is stated: «وَ اِذَا رَاَيْتَ الَّذِيْنَ يَخُوْضُوْنَ فِيْۤ اٰيٰتِنَا فَاَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتّٰى يَخُوْضُوْا فِيْ حَدِيْثٍ غَيْرِهٖ وَ اِمَّا يُنْسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطٰنُ فَلَا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرٰى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ» [ الأنعام : ۶۸ ] "And when you see those who engage in (vain) discussion about Our verses, then turn away from them until they engage in some other topic. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then after remembering, do not sit with such wrongdoers." In the hadith, it is also forbidden to sit in a gathering where there is open disobedience to Allah's command, as it is stated: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not sit at a table where wine is being circulated." [ أحمد: 20/1، ح : ۱۲۶ ، و حسنہ الألبانی فی غایۃ المرام ] Despite such clear commands, it was the habit of the hypocrites to leave the gatherings of Muslims and join the gatherings of Jews and polytheists where the verses of Allah were mocked. The verse under commentary refers to this very practice of theirs. However, the verse is general, and it is forbidden to participate in any gathering where the Quran and Sunnah are mocked, whether it is the gathering of disbelievers and polytheists or of the people of innovation and the sinful and wicked. When one cannot stop evil with his hand, nor with his tongue, then to silently sit and listen, and not even dislike it in the heart, is contrary even to the weakest level of faith. Rather, it is stated: "You will then be like them." That is why Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Whoever hears the faults of his religion in a gathering, and then continues to sit among them, even if he does not say anything himself, he is a hypocrite." (Mawduh)

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

140. 1. That is, if despite being forbidden, you sit in such gatherings where the verses of Allah are being mocked and you do not object to it, then you too become equal in sin with them. As it is mentioned in a hadith: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not participate in a gathering where wine is being served." From this, it is understood that participating in such gatherings and assemblies where the commands of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ are mocked verbally or practically—as is commonly done in the circles of today's elites, fashionable, and Westernized groups—is a grave sin. (اِنَّكُمْ اِذًا مِّثْلُھُمْ ۭ) 4:140 The Qur'anic warning in (4:140) is enough to make the believers tremble, provided there is faith in the heart.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

140. Allah has already revealed to you in the Book [186] that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, do not sit with them until they engage in some other conversation; otherwise, you would surely be like them. Surely, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers together in Hell.

[186] This command was revealed in Makkah in Surah Al-An'am, verse number 68, which was: "And when you see those who engage in (blasphemous) discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they engage in a different topic. And if Satan causes you to forget, then do not sit after the remembrance with the wrongdoing people." That is, those who sit in gatherings where the verses of Allah are openly mocked and ridiculed, or outright denied, and they listen to such things with indifference and remain seated there, and their sense of faith is not stirred in the least, then there remains no difference between them and those disbelievers. In such a situation, it is necessary for a Muslim to express his displeasure, silence their tongues, and if he can convince them of the truth with arguments, he must do so. And if he cannot do either of these, then at the very least, he should get up and leave from there. Thus, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever among you sees an evil (un-Islamic) act, he should change it with his hand; and if he cannot do so, then with his tongue; and if he cannot do even that, then at least he should consider it evil in his heart, and that is the weakest level of faith."
[مسلم، کتاب الایمان، باب کون النہی عن المنکر من الایمان]
And in another narration, it is stated that if he does not even consider it evil in his heart, then know that he does not possess even a mustard seed's worth of faith. It should be clear that Surah Al-An'am was revealed in Makkah, and those who mocked the verses of Allah there were the disbelievers of Makkah, while this Surah An-Nisa was revealed in Madinah, where those who mocked the verses of Allah were the Jews of Madinah and the hypocrites. Thus, mocking the messengers of Allah and the verses of Allah has always been the old practice of all kinds of disbelievers.
