And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), as it was to those (Allâh’s Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allâh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers."
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And verily
أُوحِىَ ūḥiya it has been revealed
إِلَيْكَ ilayka to you
وَإِلَى wa-ilā and to
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
مِن min (were) before you
قَبْلِكَ qablika (were) before you
لَئِنْ la-in if
أَشْرَكْتَ ashrakta you associate (with Allah)
لَيَحْبَطَنَّ layaḥbaṭanna surely, will become worthless
عَمَلُكَ ʿamaluka your deeds
وَلَتَكُونَنَّ walatakūnanna and you will surely be
مِنَ mina among
ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ l-khāsirīna the losers

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 65) ➊ { وَ لَقَدْ اُوْحِيَ اِلَيْكَ … :} Sulaiman Al-Jamal said: In {’’ وَ لَقَدْ ‘‘} and {’’ لَىِٕنْ اَشْرَكْتَ ‘‘}, after the "lam" there is an implied oath, meaning Allah Almighty has said this with an oath and with great emphasis. {’’ لَىِٕنْ اَشْرَكْتَ ‘‘} (If you commit shirk), the addressee is the Prophet (peace be upon him) as well as every prophet from among the previous prophets. That is, revelation was sent to you and to each prophet before you, addressing them, that if you commit shirk, then whatever good deed you may have done will surely be wasted, and you will surely be among the losers. See also Surah Al-An'am (88).

➋ Here is a question: Allah Almighty knew that no prophet would commit shirk, so what is the purpose of revealing this to them? The answer is that the intent is to express the severity and evil of shirk, that if, hypothetically, even such close servants of Allah were to commit shirk, their deeds would be wasted—so what status do other people have? In other words, by addressing the prophets, their nations are being warned.

➌ This warning of all deeds being wasted along with shirk is for those whose death occurs in a state of disbelief and shirk, as He said: « وَ مَنْ يَّرْتَدِدْ مِنْكُمْ عَنْ دِيْنِهٖ فَيَمُتْ وَ هُوَ كَافِرٌ فَاُولٰٓىِٕكَ حَبِطَتْ اَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ الْاٰخِرَةِ » [البقرۃ : ۲۱۷ ] "And whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies while he is a disbeliever—then those are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter." Those who repent are exempt from this. See Surah Al-Furqan (68 to 70).

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

65. 1. If you commit shirk, it means, if death comes upon shirk and you did not repent from it. Although the address is to the Prophet ﷺ, who was free from shirk and protected from it in the future as well. Because a prophet is under Allah’s protection and infallibility, there was no possibility of them committing shirk, but in reality, the purpose is to indirectly address and make the ummah understand.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

Yet it has already been revealed to you and to those before you that if you associate partners with Allah, your deeds will surely be nullified [82], and you will certainly be among the losers.

[82] It should be clear that the occurrence of shirk from the Prophets is impossible. Because among the foremost objectives for which they are sent is the eradication of shirk and the propagation of tawheed. They themselves adhere to this and invite others towards it. Here, where this matter is addressed to you, the purpose is to express the utmost condemnation of shirk.
