Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 24) ➊ The predicate of {’’ اَفَمَنْ يَّتَّقِيْ بِوَجْهِهٖ ‘‘} is omitted (as has been mentioned earlier in Ayah 19): {’’أَيْ كَمَنْ هُوَ آمِنٌ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ، أَوْ كَمَنْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ‘‘} meaning, can the person who will save himself from the worst punishment on the Day of Resurrection with his face be like the one who will be fearless of punishment, or who will be among the people of Paradise? As it is said: « اَفَمَنْ يُّلْقٰى فِي النَّارِ خَيْرٌ اَمْ مَّنْ يَّاْتِيْۤ اٰمِنًا يَّوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ» [ حٰمٓ السجدۃ : ۴۰ ] "So is the one who is thrown into the Fire better, or the one who comes in security on the Day of Resurrection?" See also Surah Qamar (48) and Surah Mulk (22).

➋ In the world, when a person faces fire or anything painful, he uses his hands as a shield to protect his face from it. On the Day of Resurrection, since the hands of the people of Hell will be tied, they will be forced to use their faces as a shield against the punishment, meaning the worst blows of punishment will strike directly on their faces.

{وَ قِيْلَ لِلظّٰلِمِيْنَ ذُوْقُوْا … :} meaning, they will try to protect themselves from the punishment with their faces, but this will not avail them at all; rather, the Fire will cover them from every side. Instead of saying "it will be said to them," it is said, "it will be said to those wrongdoers," the purpose being to make clear that the cause of their punishment will be their wrongdoing, and it will be said to them, "Taste the recompense of what you used to earn."

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

24. 1. That is, can this person be equal to the one who will be completely fearless and in peace on the Day of Resurrection? That is, by including the omitted phrase, this will be its meaning.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

24. Then can one who will shield himself with his face against the awful punishment [40] on the Day of Resurrection (be like one who is safe)? And it will be said to the wrongdoers, “Taste what you used to earn.”

[40] It is human nature that when a blow is about to strike his body, he first tries to fend it off with his hands, that is, he defends himself from the incoming strike with his hands. And if the attack is severe and cannot be stopped with the hands, he is willing to let any other part of his body be struck, but in any way possible, he tries to protect his face from that blow. On the Day of Resurrection, their hands will be tied and their helplessness will be such that they will be forced to endure that punishment on their faces. Then, at the same time, it will also be said to them that this is the recompense for your own deeds. Here, the next part of the question is omitted, and the sentence is thus completed: Can such a person be like the believer who, in the Hereafter, has no fear of any pain or loss, but rather, on that day, enjoys every kind of comfort and peace?
