Surah Az-Zumar (39) — Ayah 22

أَفَمَن شَرَحَ ٱللَّهُ صَدْرَهُۥ لِلْإِسْلَـٰمِ فَهُوَ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْقَـٰسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مِّن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ ﴿22﴾
Is he whose breast Allâh has opened to Islâm, so that he is in light from His Lord (as he who is a non-Muslim)? So woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allâh! They are in plain error!
أَفَمَن afaman So is (one for) whom
شَرَحَ sharaḥa Allah has expanded
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah has expanded
صَدْرَهُۥ ṣadrahu his breast
لِلْإِسْلَـٰمِ lil'is'lāmi for Islam
فَهُوَ fahuwa so he
عَلَىٰ ʿalā (is) upon
نُورٍۢ nūrin a light
مِّن min from
رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ rabbihi his Lord
فَوَيْلٌۭ fawaylun So woe
لِّلْقَـٰسِيَةِ lil'qāsiyati to (those are) hardened
قُلُوبُهُم qulūbuhum their hearts
مِّن min from
ذِكْرِ dhik'ri (the) remembrance of Allah
ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (the) remembrance of Allah
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those
فِى (are) in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢ ḍalālin error
مُّبِينٍ mubīnin clear

(Ayah 22) ➊ {اَفَمَنْ شَرَحَ اللّٰهُ صَدْرَهٗ لِلْاِسْلَامِ …:} For the explanation of "sharh sadr" (expansion of the breast), see Surah Al-An'am, Ayah (125). In this verse, it is stated that a believer and a disbeliever, and an obedient and a disobedient person, can never be equal. {’’مَنْ شَرَحَ اللّٰهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ‘‘} is the subject, its predicate is omitted, which is understood from the following sentence: {’’أَيْ كَمَنْ هُوَ قَاسِي الْقَلْبِ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ‘‘} That is, can the person whose heart Allah Almighty has opened for the acceptance of Islam and who is walking in the light of guidance from his Lord, be like the person whose heart has become as hard as stone towards the remembrance of Allah and who does not even remember his Lord? In several places in the Noble Qur'an, the predicate of such a subject is also mentioned, as He said: «اَفَمَنْ يَّعْلَمُ اَنَّمَاۤ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَّبِّكَ الْحَقُّ كَمَنْ هُوَ اَعْمٰى » [ الرعد : ۱۹ ] "Then is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind?" And He said: « اَفَمَنْ كَانَ عَلٰى بَيِّنَةٍ مِّنْ رَّبِّهٖ كَمَنْ زُيِّنَ لَهٗ سُوْٓءُ عَمَلِهٖ وَ اتَّبَعُوْۤا اَهْوَآءَهُمْ » [ محمد : ۱۴ ] "So is he who is upon a clear proof from his Lord like one for whom the evil of his deeds has been made attractive and they follow their desires?"
{فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْقٰسِيَةِ قُلُوْبُهُمْ … : ’’اَلْقَاسِيَةُ‘‘ ’’قَسَا يَقْسُوْ قَسْوَةً‘‘} is a feminine active participle. For the meaning of {’’قَسْوَةٌ‘‘}, see Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah (74): the explanation of «ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوْبُكُمْ ».
{ اُولٰٓىِٕكَ فِيْ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيْنٍ : } What greater misguidance can there be than for a person to turn away from his very Master?

22. 1. That is, the one who is granted by Allah the ability to accept the truth and adopt the path of goodness, so due to this openness of the chest, he is upon the light of his Lord—can he be like the one whose heart is hard for Islam, and whose chest is constricted, and who is wandering in the darknesses of misguidance?

22. Is the one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is upon a light [33] from his Lord, (like the one who does not learn)? So woe to those whose hearts are hardened [35] against the remembrance of Allah. They are in clear error.

The Meaning of Sharh Sadr:

To open the breast for Islam means that such certainty in the truth of Islam is established in the heart that there remains no room for any kind of doubt or suspicion. And a person becomes so prepared to face the difficulties that arise in this path that he would not be willing to turn back from it at any cost. Although such sharh sadr is only attained by the grace of Allah, even this grace is granted by Allah only to the one who himself is willing to accept the truth.

[34] By this light is meant the Book revealed by Allah Almighty, which guides him in every field of life and at every turn. Then after this is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who, by practically implementing the commands of Allah, presented himself as a model before the Ummah.

[35] That is, on one side is the person whose breast Allah has opened for Islam and who, with the light granted by Allah, is walking on the path of Allah with utmost peace and tranquility. On the other side is the person whose heart becomes constricted as soon as he hears the truth, and the effects of displeasure begin to appear on his face. Then his stubbornness, enmity, and obstinacy have made his heart as hard as stone, into which not even a drop of goodness can penetrate. No admonition has any effect on him, nor is he ever granted the ability to remember Allah. He either follows his own desires or wanders in the darkness of the customs and blind imitation of his forefathers. Can these two be alike in terms of their outcome?
