هَـٰذَا فَلْيَذُوقُوهُ حَمِيمٌ وَغَسَّاقٌ ﴿57﴾
This is so! Then let them taste it - a boiling fluid and dirty wound discharges.

(Ayah 57) {هٰذَا فَلْيَذُوْقُوْهُ حَمِيْمٌ وَّ غَسَّاقٌ : ’’ هٰذَا ‘‘} That is, this is the punishment, so let them taste it. {’’ حَمِيْمٌ ‘‘} Extremely hot water. {’’ غَسَّاقٌ ‘‘ } Pus flowing from the skins of the people of Hell. (Mufradat) {’’غَسَقَ الْجُرْحُ } (D, S) {غَسَقَانًا‘‘} When pus, etc., comes out from it. In Qamoos and other lexicon books, the meaning of {’’غَسَّاقٌ‘‘} is written as {’’اَلْبَارِدُ وَ الْمُنْتِنُ‘‘}, extremely cold and foul-smelling. In the Quran, this word has come in two places in contrast to {’’ حَمِيْمٌ ‘‘}, one here and one in Surah Naba (25), from which it is understood that here its meaning as extremely cold and foul-smelling is more appropriate, because in Hell there is punishment of heat (fire) as well as cold (zamharir). Ibn Kathir said {’’اَلْحَمِيْمُ‘‘} is heat that has reached the extreme and {’’غَسَّاقٌ‘‘ } such cold that its coldness cannot be tolerated.

57. 1 This is the drinking of scalding hot water and pus, taste it, boiling hot water, which will cut up their intestines, the pus and filthy blood that will come out from the skins of the people of Hell, or extremely cold water, the drinking of which will be extremely difficult.

The Literal Meaning of ﴿غساق﴾:

The meaning of ﴿غساق﴾ is generally taken as pus or flowing pus mixed with blood, whereas the authors of Munjid, Fiqh al-Lughah, and Muntaha al-Arab have all defined its meaning as extremely cold and foul-smelling water. In the Quran, the word ﴿غساق﴾ has been used in contrast to hamim (boiling water) at two places: here and in verse 25 of Surah An-Naba, from which it is understood that the more appropriate meaning is extremely cold and foul-smelling water.
