جُندٌ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ ﴿11﴾

(As they denied Allâh’s Message) they will be a defeated host like the Confederates of the old times (who were defeated).

Tanween on {جُنْدٌ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُوْمٌ مِّنَ الْاَحْزَابِ : ’’ جُنْدٌ ‘‘} is for diminution and belittlement, and {’’ مَا ‘‘} is for further emphasis, as it is said: {’’أَكَلْتُ شَيْئًا مَا، أَيْ شَيْئًا قَلِيْلًا‘‘} "I ate a little thing." {’’ جُنْدٌ مَّا ‘‘} means a small, insignificant army. {’’ هُنَالِكَ ‘‘} means there, at that place, that is, in opposition to the Messenger of Allah. {’’ الْاَحْزَابِ ‘‘ ’’حِزْبٌ‘‘} is its plural, meaning various armies, groups. That is, what worth does this insignificant army have, which boasts of divine powers and gathers from different groups and armies? Whenever it comes to the field, it is bound to be defeated, as mentioned in Surah Qamar: « سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَ يُوَلُّوْنَ الدُّبُرَ » [ القمر : ۴۵ ] "Soon this group will be defeated and they will turn their backs and flee." On the day of Badr, the Prophet (peace be upon him) advanced towards the field saying {’’ سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَ يُوَلُّوْنَ الدُّبُرَ ‘‘}, then at Uhud, Khandaq, and the conquest of Makkah, every time it happened that the army of the disbelievers was defeated.

11. 1. This is a promise from Allah Almighty of help to the Prophet ﷺ and the defeat of the disbelievers. That is, this army of the disbelievers, which is one of the armies of falsehood, whether it is large or insignificant, do not care about it at all nor fear it; defeat is their destiny. ھُنَالِکَ is an indication towards a distant place, which can refer to the Battle of Badr and the Day of the Conquest of Makkah, where the disbelievers suffered a humiliating defeat.

11. They are just a small army among the (many) armies [13] that will be routed here.

[13] Among the groups who have spoken arrogantly against Allah, this is not such a great multitude; even greater groups have passed before and have been defeated. These disbelievers of Makkah are but a small gathering, who, right here in Makkah where they sit and talk, will witness their complete defeat. This was, in fact, a prophecy regarding the disbelievers of Makkah, which was fulfilled word for word just a few years later.
