(Ayah 89) {فَقَالَاِنِّيْسَقِيْمٌ :} This was indeed a true statement, because generally a person’s health is somewhat unwell, but the people understood its meaning differently (that he was not able to go), by which Ibrahim (peace be upon him) succeeded in achieving his objective. Such statements, in which the speaker intends one thing and the listener understands something else, are called “ma‘arid,” through which a person avoids outright lying. 89. 1. He looked at the sky for reflection and contemplation, as some people do. Or he did so to mislead his own people, who believed that the movement of the stars had an effect on the events of time. This incident took place when the day came for his people, which they used to celebrate by going out as a festival and national holiday. The people invited Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to go along with them. But Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was seeking solitude and an opportunity, so that he could destroy their idols. Thus, he considered this a favorable opportunity, thinking that when the whole nation goes out to the festival tomorrow, he would carry out his plan. And he said that he was sick, or that the movement of the heavens indicated that he was about to become sick. This statement was not entirely false; every human is somewhat ill in some way. Moreover, the polytheism of his people was a constant affliction in the heart of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), which caused him distress, as the necessary details of this have already been mentioned in Surah Al-Anbiya, 63.
