قَالَ قَآئِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّى كَانَ لِى قَرِينٌ ﴿51﴾
A speaker of them will say: "Verily, I had a companion (in the world),
قَالَ qāla Will say

(Ayah 51 to 53){ قَالَ قَآىِٕلٌ مِّنْهُمْ اِنِّيْ كَانَ لِيْ قَرِيْنٌ … : ’’ قَرِيْنٌ ‘‘} A companion or friend is called one who is of the same age or equal in bravery, strength, and other such qualities, and this word is generally used in a negative sense. (Kilani) One of them in Paradise will say, "I had a companion in the world, who denied resurrection after death. He used to mockingly say in denial, 'Are you really among those who believe in such an irrational thing as being brought back to life after death? When we have died and become dust and bones, will we really be recompensed for our deeds?'" {’’مَدِيْنُوْنَ‘‘ ’’مَدِيْنٌ‘‘} is the plural of {’’دَانَ يَدِيْنُ دِيْنًا‘‘}, which is originally the passive participle {’’مَدْيُوْنٌ‘‘} from {’’دَانَ يَدِيْنُ دِيْنًا’’} (ض).
