Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Then ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Are they stronger as creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 11) {فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْاَهُمْاَشَدُّخَلْقًا … :} The disbelievers were not willing to accept the Hereafter; they said that being resurrected after death is not possible at all. Allah Almighty has mentioned two arguments here in response to them. The first is that what We have already created before this, which is mentioned in this Surah, i.e., the heavens and the earth and the creatures between them, the Saffat, the Zajirat, the Talayat, the angels, the devils, and the stars, etc.—is it more difficult to create them or to recreate these people? Obviously, compared to such great creations, what significance does a helpless human have that Allah Almighty would not be able to resurrect him, as He said: «لَخَلْقُالسَّمٰوٰتِوَالْاَرْضِاَكْبَرُمِنْخَلْقِالنَّاسِوَلٰكِنَّاَكْثَرَالنَّاسِلَايَعْلَمُوْنَ »[ المؤمن : ۵۷ ] "Surely, the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know." For more details, see Surah Ya-Sin (81).
The second argument is that We created them from sticky clay (which is formed by mixing soil and water), and they will become dust again after dying. So when We created them from clay the first time, why can We not recreate them from the same clay, when We have already created them once before!? (See Hajj: 5) And every intelligent person knows that making something a second time is easier than making it the first time. This very reality Allah Almighty has stated in Surah Ar-Rum, saying: «وَهُوَالَّذِيْيَبْدَؤُاالْخَلْقَثُمَّيُعِيْدُهٗوَهُوَاَهْوَنُعَلَيْهِ »[ الروم : ۲۷ ] "And He is the One who originates the creation, then He will repeat it, and that is even easier for Him."
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
11. 1. That is, things like the earth, angels, and the heavens that We have created, which are extremely unique in terms of their size and vastness. Is the creation and resurrection of these people more difficult and challenging than the creation of these things? Certainly not.
11. 2. That is, We created their father Adam ؑ from clay. The meaning is that why do these people consider the life of the Hereafter to be so far-fetched, when their own creation originated from something extremely insignificant and weak? While they do not deny the creation of things far stronger, greater, and more complete and perfect than themselves. (Fath al-Qadeer)
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
11. (O Prophet!) Ask them: Is their creation more difficult, or that of what We have created? We created them from sticky [7] clay.
[7] The Different States of Clay from Which Adam’s Figure Was Made, Refutation of Darwin’s Theory:
The seven different states through which clay was passed to create man are detailed as follows: (1) ﴿تراب﴾ meaning dry clay. [40: 67] (2) ﴿ارض﴾ meaning ordinary clay or earth. [71: 17] (3) ﴿طين﴾ meaning wet clay or mortar. [6: 2] (4) ﴿طين لازب﴾ meaning sticky or adhesive clay. [37: 11] (5) ﴿حماٍ مسنون﴾ meaning foul-smelling mud. [15: 26] (6) ﴿صلصال﴾ meaning pottery, that is, clay baked by heat. [15: 26] (7) ﴿صلصال كالفخار﴾ meaning a potsherd that rings with a sound. [55: 14] These are the different forms of clay or earth. At one time, water was mixed with the clay, and later, through heat, the water was dried out. The Quran, in various places, has mentioned any one or two of these different states. And whichever state is mentioned, all are correct. This statement refutes Darwin’s theory of evolution, according to which man came into existence after passing through the stages of plants and animals, whereas the seven different states described by Allah Almighty are all completed within minerals or clay itself. In this verse, Allah Almighty has mentioned two further points: one is that, compared to the great and astonishing creatures that Allah has already created, what significance does man have that his creation would be difficult for Him; and the second is that Allah Almighty created man by passing him through seven different states of clay. Then, after death, he will mix with the earth and become clay again. So, will He who created man by passing him through so many states of clay the first time not be able to create him again by passing him through different states? [For details on Darwin's theory of evolution, see 15:29, footnote 19]
