وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً لَّعَلَّهُمْ يُنصَرُونَ ﴿74﴾
And they have taken besides Allâh âlihah (gods), hoping that they might be helped (by those so-called gods).
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ wa-ittakhadhū But they have taken
مِن min besides
دُونِ dūni besides
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
ءَالِهَةًۭ ālihatan gods
لَّعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum that they may

(Ayah 74){ وَ اتَّخَذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ … :} Whatever else man has worshipped besides Allah, he has done so only so that they may help him, fulfill any of his needs, or remove any of his difficulties. 74. 1. This is an expression of ingratitude for blessings, that the aforementioned blessings from which they benefit are all created by Allah. But instead of giving thanks for Allah's blessings—that is, worshipping and obeying Him—they attach their hopes to others and make them objects of worship.
