And We have made therein gardens of date-palms and grapes, and We have caused springs of water to gush forth therein.

(Ayah 34) {وَجَعَلْنَافِيْهَاجَنّٰتٍمِّنْنَّخِيْلٍ … : ’’ نَخِيْلٍ ‘‘ ’’نَخْلٌ‘‘} is the plural of, just as {’’عَبْدٌ‘‘} is the plural of {’’عَبِيْدٌ‘‘}. {’’ اَعْنَابٍ ‘‘ ’’عِنَبٌ‘‘} is the plural of, and {’’ الْعُيُوْنِ ‘‘ ’’عَيْنٌ‘‘} is the plural of, meaning wells and springs from which the land is irrigated. That is, by reviving the dead land, We not only grow grain for their food, but also abundantly produce various kinds of fruits for their enjoyment and pleasure. Here, only two fruits are mentioned because they are highly beneficial and also favored by the Arabs, and their production is also greater in Arabia. Then, grain is mentioned first because its production is higher and its importance as food is well established. Until a person fills his stomach with bread or rice, etc., his nutritional needs are not fulfilled by fruits alone. (Ahsan-ul-Bayan)
