And they say: "We are more in wealth and in children, and we are not going to be punished."

(Ayah 35) {وَقَالُوْانَحْنُاَكْثَرُاَمْوَالًاوَّاَوْلَادًا … :} That is, firstly, they boasted about the abundance of their wealth and children and belittled the prophets and their followers, just as Pharaoh considered himself superior because he was the king of Egypt and called Musa (peace be upon him) "mean" (insignificant). See Surah Az-Zukhruf (51 to 54) {’’ وَمَانَحْنُبِمُعَذَّبِيْنَ ‘‘} Secondly, they considered their prosperity as proof of Allah’s pleasure, saying that if Allah were displeased with them, why would He give them more wealth and children than you? This, they argued, was proof that no punishment would ever come upon them. (In {بِمُعَذَّبِيْنَ }, the letter "ba" is for emphasis of negation.) 35. 1. That is, when Allah has blessed us in this world with abundance of wealth and children, then even if the Day of Resurrection is established, we will not be punished. As if they have compared the Hereafter to the world, that just as in the world both disbelievers and believers receive Allah’s blessings, it will be the same in the Hereafter as well, whereas the Hereafter is the abode of recompense, where the deeds done in the world will be rewarded—good deeds with good reward and bad deeds with bad reward. Whereas the world is the abode of trial, here Allah Almighty, as a test, bestows worldly blessings upon everyone. They considered the abundance of worldly wealth and means as a sign of Allah’s pleasure, whereas this is not the case. If it were so, Allah Almighty would have blessed His obedient servants with the most wealth and children.

35. And they also said, "We are greater than you in wealth and children [53], and we will not be punished."
[53] The Belief of Prosperous People Regarding the Hereafter:
This prosperous class does not state the real reasons for their denial; instead, they present something else in an appealing manner as the reason for their denial, which even seems reasonable to ordinary worldly people. Their argument, which they present before the Prophet and his followers, is that Allah is kind to us, not to you. Allah has given us mansions, cars, heaps of wealth and riches, and children. He was pleased with us, that is why He blessed us with these favors. And as for the Hereafter with which you are frightening us—even if it does occur—what reason is there that the Allah who is kind to us today would not be kind to us tomorrow, and would punish us without any reason?
