Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 24) ➊ {لِيَجْزِيَ اللّٰهُ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ بِصِدْقِهِمْ:} Regarding the Battle of Ahzab, Allah Almighty has described matters such as the arrival of the armies of the polytheists, the siege of Madinah, the intense fear that befell the Muslims, the taunts and cowardly remarks of the hypocrites, the steadfastness and sacrifice of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and the unparalleled character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Now, the wisdom behind all these matters is explained: Allah Almighty could have bestowed blessings upon the Muslims without these hardships if He had willed, but He did all this so that He might test those who claim faith, and reward those who prove true and steadfast in their trial for their truthfulness. And this is the way of Allah Almighty, as He said: «{ وَ لَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ حَتّٰى نَعْلَمَ الْمُجٰهِدِيْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَ الصّٰبِرِيْنَ وَ نَبْلُوَاۡ اَخْبَارَكُمْ [ محمد : ۳۱ ] “And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you and the patient, and We will test your affairs.” And He said: «{ مَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ لِيَذَرَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ عَلٰى مَاۤ اَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ حَتّٰى يَمِيْزَ الْخَبِيْثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ [ آل عمران : ۱۷۹ ] “Allah is not such that He would leave the believers in the state you are in until He separates the impure from the pure.”

{ وَ يُعَذِّبَ الْمُنٰفِقِيْنَ اِنْ شَآءَ اَوْ يَتُوْبَ عَلَيْهِمْ :} This does not mean that if Allah wills, He may punish the hypocrites, and if He wills, He may not, because for those who die upon disbelief, He has already decreed punishment. Rather, it means that if He wills, He may not grant the hypocrites who break their covenants the divine enablement to repent before death and may punish them for their hypocrisy, and if He wills, He may grant them the divine enablement to repent and accept their repentance. The evidence for this is in the words of {’’ اَوْ يَتُوْبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ‘‘}.

{اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ غَفُوْرًا رَّحِيْمًا :} This is the answer to the question: How will the hypocrites, who have already become deserving of the lowest depths of the Fire, repent? It is said that Allah Almighty has always been exceedingly forgiving, that is, One who covers sins, and most merciful. He may, out of mercy, cover the sins of whomever He wills, and then bestow further mercy upon them. In this, there is encouragement for the hypocrites who broke their covenants to repent, and glad tidings of the acceptance of their repentance.

24-1. That is, grant them the divine enablement to accept Islam.
