Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

1. At its beginning as well, these are disjointed letters (حروف مقطعات), the knowledge of whose meaning and intent is known only to Allah. However, some commentators have mentioned two very important benefits of these. One is that this Quran has been composed and compiled from the same kind of disjointed letters, the like of which the Arabs were unable to produce. This is evidence that this Quran is revealed by Allah alone, and the Prophet upon whom it was revealed is a true Messenger. The Shariah he brought is needed by mankind, and their reform and attainment of happiness is only possible through this Shariah. The second is that the polytheists used to prevent their companions from listening to this Quran, lest they be influenced by it and become Muslim. Allah began various Surahs with these disjointed letters so that they would be compelled to listen to it, because this style of expression was new and unique (Aysar al-Tafasir).
