(Ayah 18) ➊ {وَلَاتُصَعِّرْخَدَّكَلِلنَّاسِ : ’’صَعَرٌ‘‘} A disease that affects camels, causing them to keep their necks turned to one side. Here, the verb form “tafe’il” is used to indicate affectation, meaning to deliberately keep one’s face turned to one side. This style is used to express contempt. ‘Amr bin Hunayy Taghlibi addressed some of his kings, saying: {وَكُنَّاإِذَاالْجَبَّارُصَعَّرَخَدَّهُ ¤ أَقَمْنَالَهُمِنْمَيْلِهِفَتَقَوَّمَا} “And we were such that when any tyrant twisted his cheek, we straightened his twist, so you too straighten yourself.” ({فَتَقَوَّمَا} is an imperative form (Abu Ubaid), and the final alif is for prolongation.) ➋ After advising about rulings, Luqman (peace be upon him) gave some instructions regarding manners and character. He said: Do not turn your cheek away from people, meaning do not treat them with contempt as arrogant and proud people do, but adopt humility and gentleness, as is the way of wise people. Forbidding this manner of contempt also includes, even more so, forbidding contempt through the tongue or hand. This is similar to the statement: « {فَلَاتَقُلْلَّهُمَاۤاُفٍّ} »[ بني إسرائیل : ۲۳ ] “Do not say ‘uff’ to your parents.” The intent is to prohibit causing any kind of harm. ➌ {وَلَاتَمْشِفِيالْاَرْضِمَرَحًا :} Here is a question: walking is done only on the earth, so what is the wisdom in mentioning it specifically? The answer is that, like all people, your origin is from this earth, you will be buried in it, and all other people also walk on this earth. Then how does it befit you to consider others inferior and yourself superior to them, and to walk arrogantly? (And Allah knows best.) 18-1 That is, do not be arrogant so that you consider people insignificant, and when they speak to you, you turn your face away from them. Or, during conversation, you keep your face turned away; صعر is a disease that occurs in the head or neck of a camel, causing its neck to twist. Here, this word is used in the sense of turning one's face away out of arrogance (Ibn Kathir).
18-2 That is, such a gait or attitude that expresses pride and arrogance due to wealth, status, or power—this is disliked by Allah, because a human is a humble and insignificant servant. Allah likes that he should always adopt humility and modesty according to his status and should not exceed this by expressing greatness, for greatness is only befitting to Allah, who is the owner of all authority and the source of all virtues. That is why it is stated in the hadith that the person who has even a mustard seed's weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise. Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. However, mentioning Allah's blessings or using good clothing and food, etc., without expressing arrogance, is permissible.

And do not turn your cheek away from people out of arrogance, nor walk proudly upon the earth. Surely, Allah does not like anyone who is self-conceited [24] and boastful.

To speak with puffed cheeks and to walk with swagger—these are all the manners of the self-admiring and the arrogant.
