وَإِن كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِم مِّن قَبْلِهِۦ لَمُبْلِسِينَ ﴿49﴾
And verily before that (rain) - just before it was sent down upon them - they were in despair!

(Ayah 49) {وَ اِنْ كَانُوْا مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ يُّنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ … :} is a circumstantial waw, and {’’ وَ اِنْ كَانُوْا ‘‘} is originally {’’إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا‘‘}. Due to the lam that comes on {’’ لَمُبْلِسِيْنَ ‘‘}, {’’إِنَّ‘‘} was changed to {’’ اِنْ ‘‘} and {’’هُمْ‘‘} was omitted. The repetition of {’’ مِنْ قَبْلِهٖ ‘‘} after {’’ مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ يُّنَزَّلَ ‘‘} is for emphasis, meaning that before the rain descended, right up until just before it, they were completely hopeless. This describes how prolonged hopelessness is suddenly and swiftly transformed into immediate joy, that they were utterly hopeless, and as soon as the rain descended, they began to rejoice. From this, Allah’s power is evident, that in a moment the state of the world can change; a little while ago, everyone’s faces were downcast, and now after the rain, happiness is being celebrated everywhere.
