وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ أَن يُرْسِلَ ٱلرِّيَاحَ مُبَشِّرَٰتٍ وَلِيُذِيقَكُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِهِۦ وَلِتَجْرِىَ ٱلْفُلْكُ بِأَمْرِهِۦ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ ﴿46﴾

And among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds as glad tidings, giving you a taste of His Mercy (i.e. rain), and that the ships may sail at His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, in order that you may be thankful.

وَمِنْ wamin And among
ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ āyātihi His Signs

مُبَشِّرَٰتٍۢ mubashirātin (as) bearers of glad tidings
وَلِيُذِيقَكُم waliyudhīqakum and to let you taste
مِّن min of
رَّحْمَتِهِۦ raḥmatihi His Mercy
وَلِتَجْرِىَ walitajriya and that may sail
ٱلْفُلْكُ l-ful'ku the ships
بِأَمْرِهِۦ bi-amrihi at His Command
وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ walitabtaghū and that you may seek
مِن min of
فَضْلِهِۦ faḍlihi His Bounty
وَلَعَلَّكُمْ walaʿallakum and that you may
تَشْكُرُونَ tashkurūna be grateful

(Ayah 46) {وَ مِنْ اٰيٰتِهٖۤ اَنْ يُّرْسِلَ الرِّيَاحَ مُبَشِّرٰتٍ … :} After mentioning that shirk is the cause of corruption on land and sea, Allah has mentioned as evidence of His oneness several things that everyone observes. Wherever the words {’’إِرْسَالُ الرِّيَاحِ‘‘} appear in the Quran (with the plural form of {رِيْحٌ}), they refer to pleasant winds. In this verse, two types of pleasant winds and their benefits are mentioned: one is the wind that brings the glad tidings of mercy in the form of rain, which removes dust and poisonous substances spread in the atmosphere, revives dead land, produces various crops, plants, and trees, and provides the basic necessity of water for all living beings. In short, many benefits are obtained. The second type is the favorable winds that help ships and boats travel from one place to another. In earlier times, sailing boats were common, whose movement depended mostly on favorable winds. Even today, in the era of engine-powered ships and boats, favorable and opposing winds still have a significant effect on them. It is said that these ships, which move with the help of favorable winds, are a means for you to seek Allah’s bounty, as they become an easy and inexpensive way to travel for seeking knowledge, trade, and other necessities. Then you transport thousands and millions of tons of commercial goods on these ships and earn great profits, and with these ships, you conquer countries. The things produced in one region are not limited to that area alone, but people all over the world benefit from them. Sending winds brings all these benefits, and also that you may give thanks to Allah for these blessings and, by accepting His oneness, worship Him alone.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. 46-1. That is, these winds are the harbingers of rain.

46-2. That is, both humans feel pleasure and delight from the rain, and the crops also flourish.

46-3. That is, ships also sail through these winds. The reference is to sailing ships; now, by making full use of the intellectual abilities given by Allah, humans have invented other ships and vessels that run by machines. However, even for these, favorable and suitable winds are necessary. Otherwise, Allah is capable of drowning them as well through stormy waves.

46-4. That is, by traveling to different countries through them and engaging in trade and business.

46-5. That is, for the apparent and hidden blessings, which are countless. That is, Allah provides you with all these conveniences so that you may benefit from them in your life and also worship and obey Allah!

And among His signs is that He sends the winds as bearers of glad tidings, so that He may let you taste His mercy, and so that ships may sail by His command, and so that you may seek His bounty and be grateful.

The Benefits of Winds:

Wherever the words "irsal al-riyah" appear in the Quran (that is, when the word "rih" is in the plural form), it refers to pleasant winds. In this verse, two types of pleasant winds and their benefits are mentioned. First, the winds that bring joy to the hearts before the rain of mercy and give glad tidings of rain, by which the earth is watered and there are various benefits in this rain. Second, those favorable winds that help ships and boats travel from one place to another. In earlier times, sailing boats were common, and their movement mostly depended on favorable winds. Today is the era of steamships and vessels. Even now, favorable and unfavorable winds have a considerable effect on steamships and vessels. These boats that move with the help of favorable winds are not only used for travel, but you also take your trade goods from one country to another and earn great profit. It is Allah alone who sends these winds. So do you show gratitude for this blessing of His? The demand of Allah’s kindnesses is that gratitude should be shown to Him.
