Do they not see that Allâh enlarges the provision for whom He wills and straitens (it for whom He wills). Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who believe.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 37) ➊ { اَوَ لَمْ يَرَوْا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَّشَآءُ وَ يَقْدِرُ:} That is, the reason for exulting over prosperity or despairing in adversity is that a person considers prosperity or adversity to be permanent. Such people are directed to the daily observations that occur before them: have they not seen that Allah expands provision for whom He wills and restricts it? The provision of the same person is sometimes abundant and sometimes restricted, and at the same time, someone’s provision is abundant while another’s is restricted. The matter of provision is in His hand. Sometimes, even the most intelligent and learned people fall into poverty, and He gives such sustenance to the uneducated and foolish that the educated and wise are astonished. This is Allah’s power and His wisdom, which only He knows; no one has the power to object. A believer neither considers prosperity to be permanent or the result of his own effort so that he becomes arrogant, nor does he consider adversity to be permanent so that he becomes hopeless. Rather, he always remains in a state between fear and hope, which keeps him away from pride and arrogance as well as from despair and hopelessness.

{اِنَّ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يُّؤْمِنُوْنَ :} That is, there are many signs in making the same person rich at one time and poor at another, and in making someone rich and another poor at the same time. Similarly, there are many signs in the fact that the disbelievers are constantly witnessing the law of change in the world and seeing with their own eyes that no one remains in the same state forever, nor are all people in the same state; provision expands and contracts according to Allah’s will. Despite this, they become arrogant in happiness and despair in adversity as if this state will always remain. In all these things, there are many signs for the believers, because only they benefit from them. The disbelievers neither reflect on them nor do they gain any benefit from them.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

37-1 That is, by His wisdom and expediency, He gives wealth and riches to some more and to others less. Even to the extent that sometimes, in intellect and understanding and apparent means and resources, two people seem exactly alike, and even start the same kind of business, but one person's business flourishes greatly and he prospers, while the other person's business remains limited and does not expand. After all, who is this Being who has all authority and carries out such actions? Moreover, sometimes He makes the owner of abundant wealth needy, and grants wealth and riches to the needy, and all of this is in the hands of that one Allah, who has no partner.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

Do they not see that Allah expands the provision for whom He wills and restricts it? Surely in this are signs for people who believe [41].

Allah’s Wisdoms in the Increase and Decrease of Sustenance:

That is, the expansion and constriction of sustenance are purely in Allah’s hands; He gives more to whomever He wills and less to whomever He wills, and there are many wisdoms in this increase and decrease of sustenance (for details, see the footnote of verse 62 of Surah Ankabut). But this does not mean that, due to the increase or decrease of sustenance, a person should corrupt his character. When a period of prosperity comes, he should not become arrogant and disregard everyone, even Allah, and when a period of hardship comes, he should not make Allah the target of his complaints and become hopeless of His mercy. Rather, the correct approach is that Allah tests His servants through the increase and decrease of sustenance, and the successful person is the one who demonstrates noble character in every situation. When prosperity comes, he gives thanks to Allah and becomes even more humble, and when a time of hardship comes, he acts with patience and endurance and remains hopeful of Allah’s mercy. These noble qualities are themselves such a blessing from Allah that neither any disbeliever nor polytheist can attain them, nor any atheist; they are only granted to the one who relies solely upon Allah.
