ثُمَّ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ ٱلسُّوٓأَىٰٓ أَن كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَانُوا۟ بِهَا يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ ﴿10﴾
Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they belied the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, Messengers, etc.) of Allâh and made a mockery of them.
ثُمَّ thumma Then

ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who
أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ asāū did evil
ٱلسُّوٓأَىٰٓ l-sūā the evil

كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū they denied
بِـَٔايَـٰتِ biāyāti (the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
وَكَانُوا۟ wakānū and were
بِهَا bihā of them
يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ yastahziūna making mockery

(Ayah 10) {ثُمَّ كَانَ عَاقِبَةَ الَّذِيْنَ اَسَآءُوا السُّوْٓاٰۤى …: ’’ السُّوْٓاٰۤى ‘‘ ’’أَسْوَأُ‘‘} is the feminine form, which is a superlative adjective, but here preference is not intended; rather, emphasis is meant, that is, extremely evil. Before {’’ اَنْ كَذَّبُوْا ‘‘}, there is an omitted "lam," meaning "because they denied." The use of the word {’’ ثُمَّ ‘‘} indicates that these nations were given much respite, then in the end their outcome was extremely evil.

10. Then the end of those who did evil was evil, because they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock [9] them.

[9] This was the ultimate extent of their oppression and excess. They neither reflected upon the testimony within themselves, nor did they ponder over the system of the universe, and when the messengers informed them of the real facts, they not only denied them but also began to mock the messengers and the signs of Allah. When their rebellion reached this level and they continued to advance practically in this oppression and excess, then the punishment for their evil deeds was just as severe as the evil of their actions.
