Verily, those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allâh’s Covenant and their oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter (Paradise). Neither will Allâh speak to them, nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful torment.

(Ayah 77){ اِنَّالَّذِيْنَيَشْتَرُوْنَ …: } It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man brought some merchandise to the market and placed it there, then swore an oath over it, saying, "I paid such-and-such amount for this merchandise," although he had not paid that amount (or he said, "I am being offered such-and-such amount for this merchandise," although he was not being offered that amount). The purpose of the oath was to entrap a Muslim in the transaction, so this verse was revealed about him: «اِنَّالَّذِيْنَيَشْتَرُوْنَبِعَهْدِاللّٰهِوَاَيْمَانِهِمْثَمَنًاقَلِيْلًا »[بخاری، البیوع، باب ما یکرہ من الحلف فی البیع : ۲۰۸۸، ۴۵۵۱ ] That is, those who consume people's wealth through breach of covenant, dishonesty, and false oaths, Allah will be so angry with them that in the Hereafter they will have no share, nor will Allah speak to them, nor will He look at them (with mercy), nor will He purify them, and for them there will be a painful punishment. Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears a false oath in order to unlawfully consume the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while He is extremely angry with him." Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three people with whom Allah will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify on the Day of Resurrection. (They are:) the one who lets his garment hang (below the ankles), the one who reminds others of his favors, and the one who sells his goods by means of a false oath." 77. 1. In contrast to the aforementioned individuals, the condition of other people has been described, and these include two types of people: first, those who, by turning their backs on the covenant of Allah and their oaths, did not believe in the Prophet ﷺ for a small religious benefits; second, those who, by swearing false oaths, sell their goods or usurp someone’s wealth, as has been mentioned in the ahadith. For example, the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever swears a false oath to seize someone’s wealth will meet Allah in such a state that Allah will be angry with him. He also said that there are three people with whom Allah will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify them, and for them there will be a painful punishment. Among them is the person who sells his goods by means of a false oath. These matters have been mentioned in numerous ahadith. (Ibn Kathir and Fath al-Qadir)

77. But those who exchange Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price—such people will have no share in the Hereafter. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will neither speak to them, nor look at them, nor purify them, and for them is a painful punishment [67].
[67] There are many possible ways of gaining a small benefit in exchange for Allah’s covenant and oaths; two such cases are mentioned in Bukhari. We present both cases here exactly in the words of the hadith.
Acquiring Wealth Through False Oaths:
1. Ash’ath bin Qais says that this verse was revealed concerning me. I had a well in the land of my cousin. The Prophet ﷺ said to me, “Bring your witnesses, otherwise he should take an oath.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He will surely take an oath.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever, with the intention of unjustly seizing the wealth of a Muslim, swears a false oath, then when he meets Allah, Allah will be angry with him.” [بخاري، كتاب التفسير]
2. It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Awfa that a man placed his goods in the market and, in order to deceive a Muslim, swore a false oath saying, “I used to get such-and-such price for this merchandise.” (Whereas this was not true.) Then Allah revealed this verse. [بخاري، كتاب التفسير] Other cases, such as legal sophistry, altering the Book of Allah, giving wrong verdicts through incorrect interpretation and receiving wealth in return, borrowing something and then denying it and swearing an oath, in short, all forms of dishonesty—this verse applies to all of them. It should be clear that when the Noble Quran or hadiths use such expressions regarding a crime as: “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not speak to him,” or “will not look at him,” or “Allah will be angry with him,” or “will not purify them,” then such sins are certainly major sins. Yet, despite committing such crimes, these people think that on the Day of Resurrection, they will be Allah’s close servants, that Allah’s special attention will be upon them, and that whatever little impurity of sin has touched them will be washed away for the sake of their pious predecessors. Whereas, in reality, their case will be exactly the opposite.
