Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 4,3) ➊ Here, { ”الْكِتٰبَ“ } refers to the Noble Qur’an, as if to say this is the complete Book. Due to the appropriateness of the definite article, it has been translated as “this Book.” The meaning of { ’’ نَزَّلَ ‘‘ } is to send down gradually. Unlike other heavenly books, the Qur’an was revealed over twenty-three (23) years. For its wisdoms, see Surah Al-Furqan (32). By {”بِالْحَقِّ“}, its truthfulness and being revealed from Allah is meant.
➋ { مُصَدِّقًالِّمَابَيْنَيَدَيْهِ:} The meaning of confirming the previous books is that the news and glad tidings mentioned in the earlier books are also found in this one; if they were not from Allah, there would have been much contradiction in them. One such news was that Allah would send Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the last Messenger, and the glad tiding was that Allah would reveal the Qur’an to him. For details, see Surah Al-A’raf (157) and Surah As-Saff (6). So when you accept those books which are being confirmed, then accept the confirming Book as well. (Ibn Kathir, Razi)
➌ { وَاَنْزَلَالتَّوْرٰىةَوَالْاِنْجِيْلَ:} By Torah is meant the book that was revealed to Musa (Moses) (peace be upon him), and by Gospel is meant the book that was revealed to Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him). At present, these two books do not exist in their original form. The Torah is the name of the first five books of the Old Testament of the Bible, and the Gospel is recorded in various forms in the first four books of the New Testament of the Bible. The Jews and Christians have altered them to a great extent and have mixed in their own interpretations, causing confusion. These books used to serve as guidance for people in earlier times, but when falsehood was mixed into them, Allah sent down the Qur’an, the Book that distinguishes between truth and falsehood, and in this regard, it was named {’’ الْفُرْقَانَ ‘‘}. Now, without accepting it as true, there is no other means of attaining guidance. For those who deny the revealed verses in it, there is a very severe punishment, and this is not difficult for Allah; He is dominant over all and is also the One Who takes retribution.
