Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 20

فَإِنْ حَآجُّوكَ فَقُلْ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِىَ لِلَّهِ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِ ۗ وَقُل لِّلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْأُمِّيِّـۧنَ ءَأَسْلَمْتُمْ ۚ فَإِنْ أَسْلَمُوا۟ فَقَدِ ٱهْتَدَوا۟ ۖ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرٌۢ بِٱلْعِبَادِ ﴿20﴾
So if they dispute with you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) say: "I have submitted myself to Allâh (in Islâm), and (so have) those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): "Do you (also) submit yourselves (to Allâh in Islâm)?" If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allâh is All-Seer of (His) slaves.
فَإِنْ fa-in Then if
حَآجُّوكَ ḥājjūka they argue with you
فَقُلْ faqul then say
أَسْلَمْتُ aslamtu I have submitted
وَجْهِىَ wajhiya myself
لِلَّهِ lillahi to Allah
وَمَنِ wamani and (those) who
ٱتَّبَعَنِ ۗ ittabaʿani follow me
وَقُل waqul And say
لِّلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who
أُوتُوا۟ ūtū were given
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ l-kitāba the Book
وَٱلْأُمِّيِّـۧنَ wal-umiyīna and the unlettered people
ءَأَسْلَمْتُمْ ۚ a-aslamtum Have you submitted yourselves
فَإِنْ fa-in Then if
أَسْلَمُوا۟ aslamū they submit
فَقَدِ faqadi then surely
ٱهْتَدَوا۟ ۖ ih'tadaw they are guided
وَّإِن wa-in But if
تَوَلَّوْا۟ tawallaw they turn back
فَإِنَّمَا fa-innamā then only
عَلَيْكَ ʿalayka on you
ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ۗ l-balāghu (is) to [the] convey
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
بَصِيرٌۢ baṣīrun (is) All-Seer
بِٱلْعِبَادِ bil-ʿibādi of [His] slaves

(Ayah 20) ➊ { فَاِنْ حَآجُّوْكَ فَقُلْ اَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلّٰهِ: } Even after the truth of Islam and the veracity of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have been established, if the People of the Book choose the path of disbelief and stubbornness, then say: I have submitted my outward and inward self to Allah, and so have those who follow me, the Muslims. And say to the People of the Book—the Jews and Christians—and to the unlettered people, meaning the polytheists of Arabia: If you accept Islam, you will be set upon the straight path, but if you turn away, then my duty is only to convey the message, and you will have to give account to Allah.

➋ According to this verse, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote invitational letters to all the kings and rulers of the Arabs and non-Arabs and proclaimed his universal prophethood. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! If anyone from this Ummah, whether Jew or Christian, hears about me and does not believe in what I have been sent with, he will be among the people of the Fire.” [مسلم، الإیمان، باب وجوب الإیمان برسالۃ … : ۱۵۳ ] And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have been sent to the red and the black (i.e., Arabs and non-Arabs).” [مسند أحمد : 145/5، ح : ۲۱۳۵۷، عن أبی ذر رضی اللہ عنہ ]

He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: “Every prophet was sent specifically to his own people, but I have been sent to all people.” [بخاری، التیمم، باب : ۳۳۵ ] There are numerous evidences in the Book and Sunnah for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being a Messenger to all people until the Day of Judgment. See Surah Al-A’raf (158) and Saba (28), and even to the jinn. See Al-Ahqaf (31).

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan.
