Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 181) ➊ {لَقَدْ سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ قَوْلَ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوْۤا اِنَّ اللّٰهَ فَقِيْرٌ …:} In the previous verses, emphasis was placed on spending in the way of Allah; now, in these verses, the objections of the Jews are mentioned and their answers are intended. In fact, the Jews made these objections with the purpose of criticizing prophethood. It is mentioned in the books of exegesis that when this verse was revealed: «مَنْ ذَا الَّذِيْ يُقْرِضُ اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا» [ البقرۃ : ۲۴۵ ] (Who is it that will lend to Allah a good loan), some Jews mockingly said: "Look, Allah has become poor and has resorted to asking His servants for a loan." So, in response to them, this verse was revealed. (Ibn Kathir) Actually, such objections were made by them to discourage the common people from spending in the way of Allah; otherwise, they themselves knew very well how great an insolence and disbelief it is to say such words about Allah. (Qurtubi)

{سَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَالُوْا:} That is, their insolence about Allah and their unjust killing of the messengers—all of this is being recorded in their book of deeds. On the Day of Resurrection, such criminals will be brought to justice and will be seized by the punishment of the blazing fire.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

181. 1. When Allah Almighty encouraged the believers to spend in the way of Allah and said (مَنْ ذَا الَّذِيْ يُقْرِضُ اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا) 57:11 Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan! the Jews said, "O Muhammad ﷺ, has your Lord become poor that He is asking His servants for a loan?" Upon this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse.

181. 2. That is, the aforementioned statement in which there is disrespect towards Allah, and likewise their (ancestors') unjust killing of the Prophets (peace be upon them), all their crimes are recorded in the presence of Allah, for which they will be entered into the fire of Hell.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

181. Allah has certainly heard the statement of those who said, "Allah is poor [180] and we are rich." We will record what they said, and their killing of the prophets without right, and We will say, "Taste the punishment of the burning fire."

Accusing Allah of Miserliness and the Jews’ Disrespect Towards Allah:

This statement is from the Jews. It has already been mentioned earlier in [3: 75] that due to usury and unlawful consumption among the Jews, the disease of greed for wealth, materialism, and miserliness had developed in them. Thus, when this verse was revealed:
﴿مَنْ ذَا الَّذِيْ يُقْرِضُ اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا﴾
the Jews, overcome by their miserliness, began to say: This means that “Allah is poor and we are rich. That is why He asks us for a loan.” Allah Almighty has quoted their response here as a narration. This answer of the Jews not only shows their miserliness but also fully reveals the wickedness of their hearts. The reality is that all wealth belongs to Allah alone. He is the One who has granted it to you, and whatever loan is asked for will also be spent on your own brethren, for Allah is Self-Sufficient. Then, attributing this loan to Himself and then granting a great reward for it is a special favor and grace of Allah Almighty. Furthermore, the manner in which charity is encouraged in this phrase is extremely subtle, and as subtle as this manner is, the Jews responded in an equally crude way. Thus, this insolence of theirs has also been recorded in their book of deeds, in the same record where their extreme misdeeds, such as the killing of prophets, have been written. On the Day of Resurrection, all of this will be presented before them. Then, they will be given the full punishment for their actions in the form of a burning torment.
