Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And let not the disbelievers think that Our postponing of their punishment is good for them. We postpone the punishment only so that they may increase in sinfulness. And for them is a disgracing torment.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 178) He (Allah) said, the fact that We are prolonging the lives of the disbelievers and giving them respite, granting them abundant wealth, children, and worldly blessings—do they think all this is better for them? No, rather, this is very bad for them, because it will increase their sins, the argument against them will become stronger, and in fact, all of this will become a cause of punishment for them even in this world. See Surah Al-Mu’minun (__QUR_23:55-56__), Surah Al-Qalam (__QUR_68:44__), and Surah At-Tawbah (__QUR_9:55__).
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
178. 1. In this, there is a mention of Allah's law of granting respite (Imhal), meaning Allah, according to His wisdom and will, grants respite to the disbelievers. Temporarily, He bestows upon them ease and prosperity in the world, victories, wealth, and children. People think that Allah's favor is being bestowed upon them, but if those benefiting from Allah's blessings do not choose the path of righteousness and obedience to Allah, then these worldly blessings are not Allah's favor, but Allah's respite. Through this, their disbelief and transgression only increase. Eventually, they become deserving of the eternal punishment of Hell. Allah has mentioned this subject in several other places as well. 56) 23:55, 56 "Do they think that by increasing them in wealth and children, We are hastening good things for them? No, but they do not perceive."
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
178. Let not the disbelievers think that Our granting them respite is good for them; We only give them respite so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
[175] One of the objections of the opponents of Islam, especially the polytheists of Makkah, was that if you are truly a Prophet, then because of the way we are treating you, some punishment should have already come upon us. On the contrary, not only has no punishment come upon us, but Allah is also bestowing His blessings upon us. Allah answered this very point in this verse, saying that We are granting them respite so that they may commit as many sins and acts of rebellion as possible, so that they may be subjected to a more humiliating and disgraceful punishment.
